The Cleveland Browns have made a few regretful moves over the years, but none have handicapped them like the Deshaun Watson contract. The quarterback signed a massive deal worth $230 million with all of the sum guaranteed. However, Cleveland is yet to get any worthwhile production of him three years into the agreement.
A recent report from The Athletic has put forth some damning claims such as Deshaun Watson‘s behavior in the team’s meetings and the aftermath of the Browns deal. The quarterback reportedly received at least one death threat in the 2023 off-season.
Watson’s agent David Mulugheta was sent a mail by an individual who threatened to assassinate the quarterback or revert to arson by burning his house down. This concern was immediately brought to the notice of the police but after investigating the matter, they wound up closing it as they could not find any suspects.
Deshaun Watson became the subject of death threats and hate messages after the allegations against him surfaced
Cleveland was skeptical regarding Watson. Observe the circumstances in which he was traded, it was right after nearly 24 women came forward and filed sexual misconduct lawsuits against him. In this environment, the Browns offered him one of the largest deals in NFL history even though there was a question mark attached to his availability in the near future.
Once he served his penance by remaining off the field through 11 games, the expectations were sky-high for Watson. The quarterback had two options, perform or perish in the eyes of Browns’ fans. He struggled in his first season with the team, however, he got a pass because the man had not played professional football for over a year. In his second season, he played six games and a shoulder injury sidelined him for the remainder of the year. This season, he was terrible and unfortunately, an Achilles tear ended his year in Week 7.
Now, the Browns find themselves in the same place they did while trading for Watson except for the fact that it is hard for them to be optimistic about the future considering what they have seen from him recently.
The quarterback wound up tearing his Achilles yet again recently and is now expected to remain sidelined for the whole of 2025 too. Deshaun Watson will go on to play out the rest of his contract with the Browns but the city of Cleveland will never view him as being part of the team or a leader.
