Dillon Gabriel is mature beyond his years. He quickly understood that Shedeur Sanders would receive most of the media coverage, even though the former Colorado Buffaloes QB was picked two rounds after him.

The new players completed day two of the rookie minicamp, and, unsurprisingly, the media focused on Sanders from beginning to end. At the post-training presser, Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot asked Gabriel whether the media’s focus on Sanders bothers him and the other newcomers.

Gabriel calmly replied that he was happy to share the field with Sanders and the other rookies. The 24-year-old isn’t worried about his position on the depth chart right now.

The more questions I get asked like that, it just divides the team. For me, we’re in a room full of not just us, but Kenny [Pickett], Joe [Flacco], and DeShaun [Watson]. For us, we know how important a healthy QB room is. A team that you want to be a part of.

Gabriel played six years of college football, shuffling between UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon. During his one and final season with the Ducks, Gabriel threw for 3,857 yards with 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. He was chosen as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and led Oregon to a Big Ten Championship.

Browns remain surprised that NFL insiders didn’t see their value in drafting Dillon Gabriel

The Browns were among the teams in the 2025 draft that wanted to draft a rookie quarterback. Most analysts mocked that the AFC North team might take a quarterback early in the second round.

Sanders was still available on the board on day two, but the Browns opted to strengthen their team elsewhere. Eventually, general manager Andrew Berry took Gabriel in the third round, which caught many by surprise.

During the latest episode of SportsCenter, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler revealed that the Browns are really surprised that the media didn’t favorably view the Gabriel draft.

I was told that the Browns are really surprised that the media never picked up pre-draft very much on how high they were on Gabriel with their private workouts with him, with bringing him for a top 30 visit. So, he’s still in a pretty good position right here.

According to the Bleacher Report’s mock draft, Gabriel was ranked the 163rd best player and 10th best quarterback. So it took many by surprise when the Browns selected him at 94. They clearly saw talent in him, so his value increased.

Conflicting day one camp reports

Day two of minicamp went without a hitch aside from defensive tackle Mason Graham throwing up before his blocking drills. However, there were conflicting reports on day one.

ESPN Cleveland writer Brad Stainbrook tweeted that Sanders had the upper hand over Gabriel on day one.

Yes, it’s just the first day of rookie minicamp — but Shedeur Sanders looked sharper than Dillon Gabriel. This is only the beginning. The competition is real, and it’s going to be one of the stories of the season.

Brad Stainbrook tweeted

Shortly after, a different tweet highlighted Gabriel’s prowess.

This is only the beginning, and Browns’ head coach Kevin Stefanski is well aware of it. They didn’t draft multiple quarterbacks without keeping the drama element in mind.

As of now, Joe Flacco remains the de facto number one due to Deshaun Watson’s Achilles tear. Kenny Pickett could be the number two behind Flacco, while Gabriel and Sanders compete for the third QB spot.
