One of the NHL’s favorite coaches, Jim Montgomery, got fired on Tuesday by the Boston Bruins due to the team’s consistently shaky performance. The organization hopes a new coach and a few changes may jolt the lineup for a better 2024-25 season start.

So far, the team has an 8-9-3 start to the season. Yesterday’s loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets remained the last straw for Montgomery. The Jackets demolished the Bruins with a 5-1 win.

Under Jim Montgomery, the team went for the Stanley Cup Championship twice during his stint but lost against the Florida Panthers both times. For now, manager Don Sweeney declared that assistant coach Joe Sacco will lead the team.

Today, I made a very difficult decision with regards to a coaching change. Jim Montgomery is a very good NHL coach and an even better person. He has made a positive impact throughout the Bruins organization, and I am both grateful and appreciative of the opportunity to work with him and learn from him.

Before joining the Bruins, Sacco led the Colorado Avalanche for four seasons with a record of 130-134-30. He played in the NHL for 13 years before getting into the coaching business. For now, he’ll be the interim coach until another person is chosen for the role.

Jim Montgomery joined the Boston Bruins in the 2022-23 season. While the journey was not always smooth sailing he still led the team to multiple wins and a postseason run. However, the start of 2024-25 has been rough for the team as they stand 8th in the Eastern Conference ranking.

Fans on social media are calling to fire Don Sweeney instead of coach Jim Montgomery. One X user commented, “You fired the wrong guy,” while another added, “This is like getting fired because your boss sucks at their job.” Check more fan reactions below:

Even Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla commented on how unfair the firing was and how it affects a coach. Mazzulla developed a close relationship with Montgomery during some of his visits to Boston. All in all, the disappointing news didn’t please anyone.
