Since arriving at AEW in 2021, Bryan Danielson has been involved in rivalries with some of the best wrestlers. However, he never had a confrontation with another wrestler who debuted with the Jacksonville-based company that same year. The wrestler in question is CM Punk, with whom he also shares a rich history from their time together in WWE.
While speaking in an interview with Inside The Ropes, Bryan Danielson mentioned that he wasn’t upset when the program between him and CM Punk never materialized. However, the current AEW World Champion admitted that he had expected the storyline to happen and was surprised when it didn’t. The Best in the World’s contract was terminated last September after an altercation with Jack Perry at the All In event.
The 43-year-old veteran further added that it would have been cool to revisit the rivalry with Punk. On the July 10th episode of Dynamite, Danielson triumphed over The Hangman in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final, earning a title shot against then-champion Swerve Strickland, who had captured the belt from Samoa Joe at AEW Dynasty.
Sad isn't the right word. It was something that I thought was gonna happen that didn't happen. It would have been really cool and really fun for me.Bryan Danielson on CM Punk via Inside The Ropes
On the July 31st episode of Dynamite, the 43-year-old veteran announced that if he lost at AEW All In, it would mark the end of his wrestling career. In the thrilling conclusion of a heated main event, the submission expert forced the champ to tap out with a LeBell Lock. Much to the delight of the fans, Danielson remains active in the ring, even as he contemplates stepping away from wrestling soon.
Bryan Danielson will soon make an announcement about his future after winning the AEW World Championship at All In
In 2023, Danielson made the significant decision to retire from full-time wrestling when his daughter turned seven. This means 2024 will be his final year as a full-time competitor in AEW. The American Dragon has achieved nearly everything there is to accomplish, including winning the AEW World Championship. It seems that his time to hang up his boots is approaching.
At the All In post-show media scrum, Bryan Danielson mentioned that he hadn’t put much thought into what lies ahead. He also confirmed that he would be in Champaign, Illinois, for the next episode of Dynamite, where he plans to make an announcement about his future in professional wrestling.
When a journalist asked the 43-year-old if he was considering wrapping up his career at WrestleDream in October, Danielson responded that he hadn’t made any decisions beyond All In. The Pay-Per-View is set to take place at the Tacoma Dome in his home state of Washington. He assured fans that he would provide an update on Wednesday’s Dynamite.
