The Philadelphia Phillies’ 2026 journey ended on Thursday with a 6-2 loss against the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card Series. After the game, Bryce Harper made some candid comments regarding the future of his team.

After losing 5-3 in Game 1, the Phillies found themselves 3-1 down in the 7th inning of Game 2. Then came an incredible comeback from them as back-to-back home runs from Kyle Schwarber and Harper tied the game at 3-3 in the 8th inning. A 10th-inning solo home run from Alec Bohm helped them win 4-3 and force Game 3.

In the elimination game, it was the Braves who struck first. A 3-run home run in the first inning from Michael Harris II put the hosts in control. Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola lasted just 1.2 innings.

Ozzie Albies‘ 2-run home run in the 4th inning made it a 5-0 game. After Bohm pulled one run back through a groundout, Matt Olson restored the 5-run lead with a solo home run later on.

There was no coming back for the Phillies. While a sacrifice fly from Trea Turner put them on the board once again, the Braves were able to limit their opponents and emerged as 6-2 winners to move on to the National League Division Series (NLDS).

For Harper and his team, this marked an early playoff exit this year. Since losing the 2022 World Series, the Philadelphia-based side have lost the National League Championship Series (NLCS) in 2023 and the National League Division Series in 2024 and 2025.

With repeated failures, the big question that comes up is whether this core group of Schwarber, Harper, Turner, and Nola would ever win the championship together. When asked if he was worried about the future of the team, Harper gave a candid answer.

I don’t know. I can’t really answer that question. … Each year is so different than the year before. … I imagine this team’s going to look a lot different next year with the guys that are kinda leaving this clubhouse.

One person whose future is in doubt is Don Mattingly. The 65-year-old was named the interim manager earlier this year after the team fired manager Rob Thomson following a 9-19 start.

Though the team did manage to turn their season around and reach the postseason, the Wild Card exit has raised several questions regarding the management and the core group. Harper will turn 34 later this month, while Turner, Schwarber, and Nola are all 33. J.T. Realmuto is 35, and Zack Wheeler is 36.

Bryce Harper admits Phillies did not take care of their business

The wait for their first title since 2008 will go into another year for the Philadelphia Phillies. The NL East suffered another early elimination from the playoffs as their division rivals took them down 2-1 in the Wild Card Series. Bryce Harper admitted that his team did not take care of business.

After their dramatic win on Wednesday, the momentum was in their favor. However, they fell behind quickly in Game 3 with that 3-run home run from Michael Harris II. The team was just not able to recover from that and ended up losing 6-2.

You’re here to do business. You’re here to win games, and we didn’t do that.

Harper also caught some flak online for not hustling in the 8th inning. After a strike-three pitch went away from Drake Baldwin, he started removing his protective gear, unaware of the situation. When he realised what had happened, it was too late.

Overall, Game 3 was not a good look for Harper and the Phillies. They will now watch from the sidelines as the Braves take on the 2-time defending champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, in the best-of-five division series.
