- Bryce Huff announced his retirement from football at age 27 to start a fire safety business focused on lithium-ion battery technology.
- Fans expressed mixed reactions, with many praising his decision to prioritize a venture that could save lives over continuing his NFL career.
- Huff's retirement saves the San Francisco 49ers over $5 million in cap space just before a roster bonus was triggered.
An offseason ago, the San Francisco 49ers took a chance on Bryce Huff after the young pass rusher showed glimpses of his potential during his previous five seasons.
He did not play in the Eagles’ run to Super Bowl LIX, but did enough to let the world know he can perform if given a chance in the right system, under the right guidance.
That is also the reason why the New York Jets elevated him from just being an undrafted athlete to one of their primary edge rushers. His potential left many intrigued by what he could do.
His 10 sacks in the 2023 season, despite doing it all from the bench, led the Eagles to send established sack master Haason Reddick to the Jets in exchange for the Alabama native.
With the Eagles, he could not build on those numbers, and considering the franchise had other options at its disposal, did not hesitate when the 49ers came calling with a conditional fifth-round pick in hand.
The latter organization’s trade made sense a few games into the season after star pass rusher Nick Bosa ended his season with a torn ACL. With Huff leading the line, it became clear that the team’s ability to go after quarterbacks next year would be something to watch out for.

That was before the 6’3″ star announced his retirement on social media earlier. Bryce Huff revealed that he is moving on to the business world with his company, which is focused on preventing and suppressing battery fires.
Fans react to Bryce Huff’s retirement and next venture
Football players earn millions of dollars, and Bryce Huff was earning an average of $17 million from the contract he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2024.
For someone who came up the ranks from an undrafted prospect, that is an incredible return, as not many NFL players can claim to have done so. Then, for him to leave the chance to earn more and pivot to a business that will essentially save lives stunned fans.
While some felt he could have earned another big paycheck before retiring a few years later and then doing what he wanted, others felt he was doing this because he cared more about the venture. Check out examples of those reactions below.
this is also clearly something he cares about, and everyone should do what they care about. no one should have a say about this other than congrats to him for being true to himself

The timing of this is wild. By retiring today, Huff effectively saves the 49ers over $5M in cap space right before his $1M roster bonus was triggered.

That’s an incredible pivot. Respect for prioritizing long-term health and a huge business opportunity over more hits.

Walking away from $17M a year at age 27 to save lives with battery tech. Bryce Huff really just completed the NFL side quest and moved on to the main mission.

For the amount of fires started by those, he'll make way more than he's walking away from if they sell a good patent. Careful and use proper storage on those.

Huff’s new mission shows purpose beyond football saving lives

Even though some fans might not appreciate his timing, Bryce Huff probably wants to enter the business now that Lithium-Ion battery fires have become a problem. It seems he wants to solve the problem now rather than wait.
49ers will have to find another pass rusher after Bryce Huff’s stunning retirement
It is not normal for football players to retire this early. Bryce Huff, though, becomes the second 27-year-old to retire from the game this year, after former Chicago Bears center Drew Dalman called it quits.

After Huff’s retirement, the San Francisco 49ers also have to rethink their pass rusher requirements. The signings they have made so far have mostly been on the offensive end and special teams, with Mike Evans being the big-name target of them all.
On the defensive side of the ball, their best move has been their trade for defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa. That, though, is not enough to solve their need at pass rusher.
With most of the top options already signed with their new teams, the 49ers have to work fast, unless they are looking at uniting the Bosa brothers.
