The Carolina Panthers drafted Bryce Young with high expectations last season using the first-overall pick. However, it ended up being a disaster as they finished 2-15 in 2023 and when it continued even this season, fans seemed to have gotten fed up.
Not that the disastrous 47-10 loss against the New Orleans Saints wasn’t enough, the Panthers– more specifically quarterback Young, suffered another loss in week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers, where they couldn’t put more than three points on the scoreboard. He finished the game under 100 yards by logging 84 yards on 26 throws and the third interception of this season.
After being sacked two times, Young increased the count to 66 in just one season and two games. To put this in perspective, the superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes had been sacked 150 times in his seven-year-long career in the NFL.
This made the former first-overall pick the target of fans once again, resulting in intense backlash all over social media. One fan exclaimed, “What is Bryce Young doing?” after he got sacked by linebacker Denzel Perryman, while another wrote, “That kid has to be the worst 1st pick in NFL history.”
Here are some of the fan reactions:
Some fans put forward the argument that the Panthers made no efforts to add weapons to aid the second-year signal-caller. Some sarcastically claimed that after such bizarre performances, Young is trying to get cut out of Carolina’s roster.
Dave Canales stands by Bryce Young despite dismal outing
Even though fans are really frustrated by the quarterback’s performance, the Panthers’ head coach Dave Canales expressed confidence in him while dismissing the speculations and suggestions about benching him. Regardless of the fact that the Panthers’ offensive line could only log 97 yards and picked only first four downs till the fourth quarter.
Bryce is our quarterback. I'd love to see this thing just continue to take the next steps offensively, right now. All of those things. These are all valuable reps. These are all valuable games. We'll learn a lot from this game and hopefully take another step this weekend.Dave Canales said after the game
Young was ranked 29th in the ESPN’s Total QBR among the 30 qualified quarterbacks of their rookie seasons. He is now the third player in the last 20 seasons to average 4 or fewer yards per dropback in four consecutive starts. This season, Young has thrown three interceptions and no touchdowns in two starts.
Since he is still quite new to the league, head coach Canales is said to bring out the true potential of the quarterback. The next game which the Panthers are preparing for is against the Las Vegas Raiders.
