Ever since the inception of LIV Golf, there has been a debate on which tour has the best players. For the first time, the players from these two tours will compete directly against each other as LIV Golfers Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau will take on Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. Ahead of the event, DeChambeau dropped a brutal roast against McIlroy.
The two golfers went head to head during the U.S. Open this year. For the most part of the final round, McIlroy was leading the event. After losing out in this competition by one-stroke in 2023, it seemed McIlroy would finally add a fifth major to his resume this year.
Going into the final two holes, McIlroy had a one-shot lead. Unfortunately, luck was not on the side of McIlroy once again. The North Irishman missed a three-foot putt. He repeated the same mistake on the final hole, which opened the doors for Bryson DeChambeau.
The LIV Golfer came back and claimed his second U.S. Open win, finishing one shot ahead of McIlroy. Ahead of the ‘Showdown’ in Las Vegas, McIlroy jokingly said he would like to go up against DeChambeau and try to get back at him for what he did at the U.S. Open.
DeChambeau, who was standing just near McIlroy, quickly fired back. The Crushers GC captain claimed that McIlroy did it himself,

This left the crowd who were watching the practice session amused. McIlroy was left speechless and claimed that he did not where to go from there.
Rory McIlroy comments on facing LIV Golfer in the ‘Showdown’
Since the establishment of LIV Golf in 2021, the world of golf has been left divided. Several top PGA Tour stars left them and joined the newly formed league. Rory McIlroy, who was one of the biggest voices to oppose the formation of LIV Golf and a staunch supporter of the PGA Tour, has changed his stance in recent times. He thinks that the ‘Showdown’ against LIV Golfers could be a ‘good thing‘.
With the top players not facing each other very often, there has been a decline in the viewership of golf. In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, McIlroy acknowledged how an event like the ‘Showdown’ can serve as a reminder to golf fans of the divide that exists in the sport at the moment.
The Showdown event will also make history when it comes to purse prizes. For the first time, players will receive cryptocurrency instead of actual money. The winners of the event will earn $10 million in cryptocurrency. This could pave the path for more such prizes in future sporting events.
