Bryson DeChambeau‘s quest for a 3rd U.S. Open title came to an end on Friday as he missed the cut. The 2024 champion finished with a score of 77 in Round 2 and failed to make the cut, leaving him empty handed.
Before this tournament, the LIV Golfer had been in great form at the major championships. He recorded his best career finish at the Masters Tournament (T5) despite slipping away in the final round.
At the PGA Championship, he was once again in contention. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler though would work his magic again and ran away as the winner with DeChambeau being forced to settle with another runner-up finish in this major championship.
Last year, the American golfer finished one shot behind Xander Schauffele in the PGA Championship and then went on to win the U.S. Open. He was hoping for something like that. However, the Oakmont course turned out to be a bit rough for him.
In the opening round, he made a few mistakes and ended with a score of 73. After the round, he expressed that he was pretty disappointed with his performance. Things just never got going for him in the second round.
Starting from the 10th hole, DeChambeau made 4 bogeys and 2 birdies in the first 9 holes that he played on Friday. He made 4 more bogeys and one double bogey in the final 9 holes and shot a score of 77 in Round 2.
This saw him finish the event with scores of 73 and 77, 10-over par. He ended up missing the cut by 3 shots and failed in his U.S. Open title defense.

Which other notable names along with Bryson DeChambeau missed the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open?
The Oakmont course in Pennsylvania was expected to be a tough place to perform. The course turned out as predicted, as many top names, including Bryson DeChambeau, failed to get their game going and ended up missing the cut.

DeChambeau was obviously the biggest name to miss the cut as he was the defending champion. However, several top names of his LIV Golf league and some big guns of the PGA Tour also headed home early.
One player who has been in fine form this year is Joaquin Niemann. The Chilean golfer has been on a tear on the LIV Golf and has won 4 times including last week at the LIV Golf Virginia event.
He though, struggled a bit in this major event. With scores of 75 in both rounds, he also finished with a 10-over par score and was forced to make an early exit.
2023 U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry, Patrick Cantlay were some other top names who failed to secure their status of playing over the weekend.
There was also a heartbreak for Phil Mickelson once again. The 6-time major champion, who previously claimed that this could be his last appearance in this event, seemed to be on his way to make the cut. However, 2 double bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes saw him go from even par to 4-over for the round, and he missed making the cut by one shot.

One person who barely managed to make the cut was Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irish golfer, who suffered a brutal defeat against DeChambeau in this event last year, managed to squeeze past the cut line of 7-over with a birdie on the final hole.
With the suspension of Round 2, only three players have managed to shoot scores under par. Given the conditions of the course, there is a high chance that the winning score could be a pretty low one.
