This week, LIV Golf will kick off the 2026 season. Ahead of the first event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 2-time major champion Bryson DeChambeau broke his silence regarding the league’s switch to a 72-hole format.
Since its inception, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) backed league had received several flak for their format. Unlike the other professional tours, LIV Golf used to only play 54 holes. As a result of this, their events would last just 3 rounds.
However, after the 2025 season, the breakaway tour announced a massive change. From this year, they will adopt the 72-hole format and play 4 rounds.

This decision from them stunned several golf fans. Over the years, LIV Golf had established itself as a 54-hole circuit. Their name itself referred to 54 as LIV stands for 54 in Roman Numerals.
While speaking with Today’s Golfer, DeChambeau broke his silence regarding this major switch. The Crushers GC captain pointed out that this was not what they all ultimately signed up for.
It’s definitely changed away from what we had initially been told it was going to be… I’ve got a contract for this year, and we’ll go through it there and see what happens after that… Is it what we ultimately signed up for? No. So I think we’re supposed to be different, so I’m a little indifferent to it right now.
Bryson DeChambeau said
🚨🗣️👀 #DIDNT SIGN UP FOR THIS — Bryson DeChambeau commented on LIV Golf going to 72 holes and said the changes are not what he initially signed up for. “We’ll see what happens” after playing out this season, DeChambeau told @TheTodaysGolfer.

These words from DeChambeau come at a time when there have been several speculations regarding this future. Following the return of Brooks Koepka to the PGA Tour in January, many have speculated him to be the next big name to leave LIV Golf.
His current contract runs through the 2026 season. DeChambeau has however, previously expressed his desire to stay with the LIV Golf.

Meanwhile, this format change from the league came after they reapplied for the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) points. LIV Golf had previously applied for these ranking points in 2023.
However, their application was rejected. The then OWGR chairperson, Peter Dawson, expressed that “they’re just not playing in a format where they can be ranked equitably with the other 24 tours” and turned down their appeal.
As a result of this, DeChambeau and other LIV golfers do not receive ranking points. While he and some have exemptions into the majors, other LIV Golf stars are unable to qualify for the major championships due to their low rankings as a result of no ranking points.
With a 72-hole format and increased field size, LIV Golf are hoping that their new moves meet the criteria for them to receive these ranking points.

As mentioned, DeChambeau’s contract with LIV Golf will run through 2026. With the league losing Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed this year, it is likely that they would offer a massive deal for DeChambeau to extend his stay with them. At the moment, nothing has been finalized yet.
