The Buffalo Bills reached an injury settlement with Chase Claypool and then released him. The wide receiver is now a free agent.
On Thursday, the Bills announced the release of Claypool through their social media networks. Just a couple of days ago, the 26-year-old was placed on the injured reserve after injuring his toe.
The Bills agreed to an injury settlement with Claypool and allowed him to enter free agency. He has the freedom to sign with any other team except the Bills until the terms of his injury settlement have expired, per 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov and NBC Sports Chicago.
The NFL also informed the NFLPA it has finalized rules for designating players for return from injured reserve in 2024 — a maximum of eight total designations during the regular season or 10 including playoffs. From last week’s memo: pic.twitter.com/P8BV1sTZgs

Social media reactions to the Bills releasing Chase Claypool
The NFL made some changes in the injured reserve rule in June. Previously, players needed to make the 53-man roster to return as part of the 53-man roster going into the regular season. That means players placed on injured reserve who ended up on the extended 90-man squad weren’t eligible to return. If the team deemed him valuable, they needed to include him in the final 53-man roster and then place him on IR.
However, the NFL relaxed the rules slightly. Now IR players can return to the 53-man roster on cut-down day. However, that’s not the case with Claypool, as the Bills decided it was better to release him than wait for him to recover the player who once called himself a top 3 receiver.

Chase Claypool was an offseason addition to the Bills squad after he failed to tie down a roster spot with the Miami Dolphins, who signed him during the 2023 midseason from the Chicago Bears. He appeared in 9 games, coming on as a fringe player at South Beach, receiving only 26 receiving yards.
The Bears traded a second-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who drafted the Canadian wideout in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He broke onto the scene with 62 receptions for 873 yards and 9 touchdowns in his rookie year, followed by 860 yards and 2 touchdowns in his second.
However, they opted to part ways with the Notre Dame graduate because of his off-the-field antics. Rumors spilled out from the Steelers’ locker room about Claypool’s poor work ethic. He preferred making TikTok videos over watching films and making a nuisance of himself at it.
The Steelers concluded they did not want any bad eggs amongst their ranks and traded him midseason to the Bears in 2022. Now, two years later, he is without any team.
