Arsenal legend Ian Wright came up with an unbelievable and unheard of fix for the team selection conundrum in the English camp. From Bukayo Saka to Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer, fans have argued that boss Gareth Southgate needs to come up with a working solution ahead of the knockouts.
In a recent talk-show alongside Roy Keane and Ange Postecoglou, Wright suggested that Bukayo Saka has to operate from left-back. According to Wright, Cole Palmer‘s inclusion in the squad doesn’t necessitate Saka’s removal. Instead, the Arsenal forward can be deployed as a left-back in order to allow Chelsea forward Palmer to play from the right.
Palmer made his first appearance at the 2024 Euros after being subbed on in the 71st minute for Saka. Surprisingly, Palmer took more shots on target in 20 minutes than Saka had managed in three outings (216 minutes) for England at the Euros.
Despite the game ending 0-0, fans have called for the inclusion of Palmer in the squad for the knockouts. England will take on their opponents (yet to be decided) on the 30th of June.
Cole Palmer’s cameo turns heads as England fail to impress against Slovenia
Hopes were riding on England to secure a win against Slovenia in their final group stage game at the Euros. A victory for The Three Lions would have benefitted Luka Modric‘s Croatia as it would’ve helped see them through to the knockouts as well. However, Southagte’s men were mediocre to say the least, as one of the most stacked squads at the tournament failed to find the net against 57th ranked Slovenia.
However, after sitting on the bench for England’s first two games, Chelsea top scorer Cole Palmer was given a 20-minute cameo by Southgate. Fans were excited to see the youngster make the best of his opportunity as Palmer drove the attack in the final minutes of the game. He even came close to scoring in injury time, even though his shot was comfortably saved by Jan Oblak.
With three points and a neutral goal difference, Slovenia stand a significant chance of making it to the knockouts as one of the best third placed teams. Southgate will desperately need to find a winning formula if they are to make the most of this competition. The Three Lions will face any of the second runners up from Groups D, E and F.
