After winning gold at the Paris Olympics, Team USA’s top brass knew the next generation of superstars, such as Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Paige Bueckers, and others, were knocking on the doors.
Unlike the men’s squad, where the future is questionable since the veterans LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant might not be around when Los Angeles 2028 comes, the women’s side is brimming with talent.
So much so that Team USA director Sue Bird had to also bring in some college players for the experience, while keeping veterans such as A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Napheesa Collier, and Alyssa Thomas away from this camp.
To evaluate who will make the FIBA World Cup squad next year, Bird organized a training camp where she threw in a mix of the younger players alongside some Paris Olympics veterans.
In the initial days of the training camp, new head coach Kara Lawson evenly distributed the players into groups to ensure they had a mix of all ages and experiences.
Then, on the last day of camp, the young core of Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, Angel Reese, Rickea Jackson, Sonia Citron, Kiki Iriafen, Cameron Brink, and Aliyah Boston went up against the older players.

In the end, Chelsea Gray called game. That means the ‘young n turnt’s’ as Bueckers coined her group, managed to keep the game close with the plethora of gold medalists and WNBA champions.
Fans ecstatic for Team USA’s future after watching Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and the young players hold their own
Basketball fans had access to several clips showing the young WNBA stars holding their own in those scrimmages. From Caitlin Clark’s 3-pointers and electric passing, to Angel Reese’s defense and clutch inside scoring, to Paige Bueckers’ mid-range, the proof was there.
Fans felt this was proof that not only USA Basketball, but the future of the WNBA was secure. They not only have young players who are holding their own against vets, but they kept them at arm’s length.
They also felt that, given time and playing alongside each other, this team is trending towards being unbeatable. Check out examples of those reactions below.

At this point, it is unclear if Sue Bird will organize another such camp, as Unrivaled is less than a month away. However, they will get another chance to show how they can play together.
Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and others will likely go to Puerto Rico
The United States has already clinched a spot at the 2026 FIBA World Cup to be held in Berlin, Germany. Between then and now, they could hold one training camp at the most, which could be held before the 2026 WNBA season.

That is not enough if Sue Bird and the coaches are to evaluate who to include in the final roster. They do, however, have an opportunity which they will exercise.
A qualifying tournament will be held in the middle of March. Even though others are fighting for a spot in the World Cup, Team USA is using this tournament as a good proving ground.
Bird and Kara Lawson will likely take the mix of younger players and the vets to evaluate them through scrimmage games. Expect Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and the other younger stars to be present in those qualifying.
