There are so many changes that have taken place in the past 15 months with the WNBA, just because of the advent of a generational entertainer like Caitlin Clark. Her draft and stellar performances drew crowds at every arena she played in and brought the WNBA into the limelight. It has made the WNBA move in a positive direction in terms of commanding better revenues and inviting a bigger audience to the game.
Yet, her peers have seemingly not taken kindly to being sidelined from being the main shows in the league. The likes of A’ja Wilson, Angel Reese and DiJonai Carrington, among others, have all taken shots at Clark and her fanbase, which these players have alleged to be racist at its core with no proof. The bad blood has been good to keep the league a trending topic, but reflects poorly on her peers, looking at her like sour grapes.
Christine Brennan, who has documented the rise of Caitlin Clark in her book, is irate at the latest instance of this. In an Athletic players poll, only 53.8% of respondents voted for Clark as the likely face of the league in five years. This number should obviously have been in the high 90s when you consider that Clark got 13x more votes than the highest-voted WNBA All-Star did in the 2023 voting. Brennan tweeted:
In The Athletic poll, 53.8% of WNBA players who replied said Caitlin Clark will be face of WNBA in five years. Hmmm. Only 53.8? Record TV ratings, attendance, moving to bigger arenas just for her, massive cultural fame. Is that going to stop? No. How do they not see this?
What so many do not seem to understand, and I write about this in my book: Caitlin Clark is a basketball player, yes, but she’s really an entertainer. The long 3s. The passes. The fast pace. She is a high-wire act. She brings in new fans to be entertained. No one else does that. https://t.co/UaYWIP0gfP

She then reiterated her point on the next tweet with a succinct explanation of what exactly makes Caitlin Clark box office and must-see TV:

Not making Caitlin Clark feel welcome could cost the WNBA later on
Caitlin Clark has been given a stringent whistle by WNBA referees, and hasn’t been protected by her teammates against physicality by her opponents for the most part. The former Iowa sensation was also snubbed in favor of Angel Reese as the WNBA cover athlete for NBA 2K26 – a preposterous decision that everyone feels was done to stir controversy.

The player poll by The Athletic suggests that either a lot of her WNBA competitors are delusional about the pull of the other players in the league, or intentionally didn’t vote for her as a way to spite and downplay her impact. Neither answer reflects well on professional athletes given a stage like this with the opportunity to become a major sports league.
Caitlin Clark has also been let down in a variety of ways by her own front office. If the league doesn’t start catering to her fanbase, who cause all the motion for the league, there may transpire a reality in which Clark takes her talent to leagues elsewhere in the world ahead of the next Collective Bargaining Agreement.
