Caitlin Clark reiterates DiJonai Carrington did not intentionally poke her in the eye

Caitlin Clark was without a doubt the focus of most of the new attention the WNBA received last season. In the midst of that, she upped her game and led her Indiana Fever to the playoffs. But in her first playoff games, the story that dominated conversations was when DiJonai Carrington poked her in the eye.

The story blew WNBA discourses through the roof. On one hand were fans suggesting that the Connecticut Sun star poked Clark on purpose. On the other hand, many suggested that DiJonai Carrington was trying to block the rookie’s pass, and her hand accidentally landed on Clark’s eye.

It took a different course when renowned USA Today reporter Christine Brennan directly asked Carrington if she poked the Indiana Fever guard on purpose. This prompted the WNBPA to slam Brennan and asked the league to revoke her journalist credentials. When Time magazine asked Caitlin Clark about that incident, she said.

If that would have happened in the NBA, do you think people would have showed up the next day and been like, ‘Hey, Tyrese Haliburton, did you poke Steph Curry in the eye on purpose? That whole line of questioning that [Carrington] got was not appropriate, and I did not like that.

The Indiana Fever superstar reiterated her earlier stance that Carrington did not poke her on purpose. She mentioned that while playing basketball such injuries happen, and she has suffered these injuries quite a few times.

But the point Clark was hitting home is that no one would ask such a question if it were to happen in the NBA. But because it was in the women’s game and that too by a black woman on a white woman, Christine Brennan tried to make something out of it.

Caitlin Clark will not face DiJonai Carrington in Unrivaled League

For much of the offseason, fans were trying to speculate if Caitlin Clark would join the new Unrivaled League. As spots started filling up the anticipation grew as fans felt a new league would need her fame to succeed in its first season.

But over the past couple of weeks, it became clear that the 22-year-old had a packed schedule up until NCAA March Madness. Which meant, she did not have the time to play in the new league. She confirmed to Time magazine about her offseason plans.

I didn’t rule out doing it in the future, but this year is just not the best for me. It’s going to be good for me to do my own thing and have my own space. I kind of want to just stay out of the spotlight.

Caitlin Clark to Time magazine

The superstar will spend the winter working on her own at the Fever facilities as she prepares for next season. But she does not want to play competitive basketball as she wants to have her own space. All of this points to her biding her time until season two of her WNBA career starts.
