WNBA playoff seeding shaping up as Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever win against Atlanta Dream

The WNBA season is drawing to a close with just five days of regular season games remaining. The Caitlin Clark led Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream had a must win game tonight as both are battling for playoff spots. Such matchups usually end up being a game of intelligence, grit and a desire to win over the other. Some of the plays in the game showed which side is hungrier to win.

Teams might have been well rested from the Olympics break. But when it comes down to fighting for a playoff spot, the physical battles take precedence over all out shooting. Caitlin Clark, no stranger to physicality from opponents, had to bring out a flashy move to get past her defender and score. In the 3rd quarter with the shot clock eating away, she faced guard Maya Caldwell. Caldwell’s task was simple, she had to keep the rookie from scoring.

Caitlin Clark dribbled right and immediately sent the ball to her left hand with an audacious behind the back dribble. That sent Caldwell skating to the right and unable to defend the rookie anymore. The former Iowa Hawkeyes star continued finish with a layup despite another defender coming over to help.

On a night when her teammates were struggling to finish her passes, Clark understood that in some situations she would have to come out with something else. The rookie and her Indiana Fever teammates have built some distance from Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky in a bid to confirm their playoff intentions.

Caitlin Clark helps Dream set franchise attendance record

When a rookie with a lot of hype comes into the league, it is natural for arenas to sell out in those initial days. But late into the season usually means a much lower attendance, that too in a small market. But all those factors did not stop the Atlanta Dream from setting an attendance record. In fact, they were forced to lease the much larger State Farm Arena to cater to the demand.

That demand resulted in a franchise record 17,608 fans to turn up. That is almost five times the attendance the Dream can manage on a fully maxed-out night at the home arena. That shows that no matter the location, the fanbase, or the rivalry, fans are turning up to watch the rookie continue to set and break records. She matched one today, as her fourth three-pointer matched the WNBA single season rookie record.

Most of these sellout arenas are a result of preseason ticket sales. If Caitlin Clark continues to etch her name beside WNBA records, the seasons will have similar sellout crowds. All the better for the league as it strives to improve the fortunes of teams and players.
