Caitlin Clark etches name in WNBA history books after leading her Indiana Fever to beat Brittney Griner's Phoenix Mercury
The Phoenix Mercury is one of the championship contenders for this season. Although they are still working on their own chemistry, their talent with the likes of Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and Kahleah Copper is undeniable. Therefore, the Indiana Fever would have to be on their A-game today. That need to be better was best exemplified by their rookie superstar Caitlin Clark on her way to setting another WNBA record.
The Fever went flat out from the start as they piled on the pressure on the Mercury. Their fast-paced offense required two aspects to work well. One was Caitlin Clark to push the pace and find teammates or score. The second was her teammates had to convert Clark’s passes and defend at the highest level. Both facets worked in unison as Clark dished out a franchise record 7 assists in the first quarter. The Fever at one point had a 31-point lead. Their rookie ended up recording her 5th straight double-double.
One reason for that lead was that Brittney Griner left early due to a hip injury. The Phoenix Mercury behind Kahleah Copper’s unreal performance in the fourth quarter tried to rally back. But the Indiana Fever held on to take their 9th win from the past 15 games. Now they are on pace to have the best season in the past 7 years in the WNBA.
Clark’s assists helped fellow All-Stars Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell score over 20 points. Now she is one game away from tying Courtney Vandersloot‘s WNBA record of 6-straight double-doubles for a guard.
Caitlin Clark talks ESPYS award and Serena Williams
Today’s game was after Caitlin Clark won an ESPYS for Best Record-Breaking Performance. She became the first ever person to win the award, prompting her to say this at the press conference;
Yeah, I didn’t know that until my little brother sent it to me this morning. I think it's super cool. It probably shouldn’t have been the first woman to win that award in my eyes. Because I grew up supporting so many different female athletes that I idolized, and I loved. How did Serena Williams never win that award?Caitlin Clark during the post-game presser
She did not expect that she would be the first female athlete to ever win the award. Which is why she referenced as to why someone like Serena Williams did not win it.
She won the award after her record-breaking performances with the Iowa Hawkeyes last season. A season in which she set the record for most points by any player, male or female, in NCAA D1 history. She also ended up 2nd on the all-time assists list after surpassing Courtney Vandersloot.
But yes, she knew that had the award been in existence for some time, Serena Williams with her 23 Grand Slams would have been a winner. But now she became the first recipient of that award.
