“Weird to do that with little kids” – Caitlin Clark fans get ‘shamed’ on jumbotron at WNBA playoff game by Connecticut Sun; fans react
Connecticut Sun hosted the Indiana Fever as Caitlin Clark took to the Mohegan Sun Arena to play her first WNBA playoff game.
Connecticut Sun troll Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark fans at WNBA playoff game
Caitlin Clark‘s fans have flocked to the areas where she has played this season. They were not fazed by record ticket prices ahead of her first WNBA playoff game at the Mohegan Sun Arena and ensured it was packed. So much so that the Connecticut Sun decided to take a jibe at her fans sitting in the stands wearing her famous Indiana Fever No. 22 jersey.
A Sun announcer took to the floor before the game started and brought up a segment called ‘bandwagon fan.’ They put up a graphic depicting a wagon and underneath a quote suggested that many Fever fans in the arena came on board this year. One by one they showed fans wearing Fever and Clark merchandise on the jumbotron. After initially being welcomed by boos, the fans themselves started to enjoy the troll and got into the act by waving their hands so that the cameras could pick them up.
It was a harmless jibe from the Connecticut Sun. A majority of the fans selling out arenas have only started following the WNBA this year, which has helped the league to shatter viewership and attendance records. It is also clear that they turn up in numbers whenever Indiana Fever play.
The Connecticut Sun, just like other WNBA franchises, has also benefitted from such sellout crowds. It played its first WNBA game at the iconic TD Garden as Caitlin Clark‘s fans forced a venue change. It is not like the Sun or any other team does not enjoy the benefits of these fans flocking into their arenas.
Connecticut Sun making fun of Caitlin Clark fans does not sit well with fans
Fans, however, had a problem with Connecticut Sun taking fun at the Indiana Fever fans for their own entertainment. Those fans included families and children who came to catch a glimpse of the rookie superstar. The excitement was understandable as it was her first playoff game. But fans felt it was unnecessary and reeked of jealousy.
They took to social media to call out the Connecticut Sun. A team having one of the lowest average attendances in the league to poke fun at fans was uncalled for. Check out some of those comments below:
If anything, the Connecticut Sun, a perennial playoff team, should have been more welcoming to those fans. Fans want the Sun to be appreciative than troll a source of revenue. The team should expect to be appreciative in the second game of the WNBA playoffs when Caitlin Clark plays again.
