‘Omega-level mutant’ Caitlin Clark is doing more than A’ja Wilson, claims ex-NBA player
A'ja Wilson will have strong contention from Caitlin Clark in the WNBA MVP race if she continues playing at this elite level.
WNBA MVP race has a new entrant in Caitlin Clark as A'ja Wilson and her team struggle
With the WNBA season on its closing stretch, Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson is continuing her MVP level performance. Even if she and her team lost two games to fellow championship contending teams, they are still primed to enter the playoffs as favorites. That makes Wilson the favorite to win the award, unless a certain Caitlin Clark continues her ascension.
The panel of Gil’s Arena were discussing her recent plays that have helped her Indiana Fever push for a playoff spot and bring her into the MVP race. Former NBA player Rashad McCants had this analogy:
A'ja Wilson plays on a super team, back-to-back championships. Here comes this girl doing something different. She don't have none of the pieces that she (Wilson) has. She did the work during the All-Star break. Now we see the difference, she has changed the game. Caitlin is Jean Grey out there. She's an omega-level mutant.Rashad McCants said
McCants gave evidence of Clark’s records to showcase that she is already breaking the mold. Her play is different than Wilson’s and should be considered for MVP if the Fever rank high enough.
He might have a point there, as Caitlin Clark’s improvement in scoring and passing are the reasons the Indiana Fever have been winning. Her passing has seen multiple teammates end games with double digit points. Whereas her own scoring has helped them win against other championship contenders.
Rashad McCants thinks the Indiana Fever do not have the quality of players A’ja Wilson has. Therefore, the impact of the 22-year-old’s performances is directly tied with their playoff seeding. If they do end up anywhere close to the Las Vegas Aces, Clark should get the MVP award.
Caitlin Clark will need to up her scoring for a last push for higher playoff seeding
So far, the performances have been enough to keep adding wins. But they are still below .500. With 5-6 teams hunting for a WNBA title, it will not be easy for them to finish above 4th in the standings. But if they can get to 5th, they will get a much more favorable matchup come playoff time.
The Indiana Fever have won games against 4th placed Seattle Storm and 6th placed Phoenix Mercury. They still have two more games against the Las Vegas Aces. With their recent struggles, the Fever could bring about an upset. That will give them an understanding on how to beat the WNBA champions in the playoffs.
All this suggests that if Caitlin Clark and the Fever can continue their momentum and keep defeating opponents, there is a chance they can cause an upset in the playoffs. For that, they have to finish at least 5th. Not an impossible task, but if they can achieve it, not many can argue against giving Clark the MVP.
