In her first WNBA season, Caitlin Clark has established herself as one of the most phenomenal players in the league. Coming into professional women’s basketball with unprecedented hype from her time at the Iowa Hawkeyes in college, the 22-year-old has quickly become a fan favorite. She also carried the Indiana Fever to a playoff spot as a rookie. In the process, Clark broke countless records, such as being the first rookie to achieve a triple-double and setting the record for most assists in a single WNBA game.
This has further cemented her place in contention for the Rookie of the Year award. Given her consistent performances on the court and growing popularity, Caitlin Clark is widely considered one of the greatest basketball talents of her generation. This has not gone unnoticed by the veterans of the game. One such WNBA veteran who has noted Clark’s impact on women’s basketball is former Los Angeles Sparks player Chiney Ogwumike, who recently appeared on the Awful Announcing Podcast.
Caitlin Clark, when it comes to impact, it's absolutely true. She is the most impactful player that I've...you know, seen hit the scene. Not just in basketball, but in sports in a generation for how she [Clark] moves the needle not only with viewership but business, and that rising tide lifts all boats.Chiney Ogwumike said
According to her, nobody else has brought the kind of influence Clark did on basketball in a generation.
Chiney asserted that the Indiana Fever star is pulling up the league to incredible heights. She also emphasized that when people praise other WNBA players, it shouldn’t be seen as criticism of Clark. Instead, all the players deserve recognition for their talents and contributions.
WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes talks down Caitlin Clark’s impact on Indiana Fever
With Clark racking up impressive records in her debut WNBA season, praise has continued to be heaped on the Iowa native for her sensational performances. However, not everyone agrees that she has made a significant impact in the league. Recently, WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes took a dig at Caitlin Clark and refused to acknowledge her impact on the Fever since being drafted first overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
Instead, Swoopes chose to single out Katie Samuelson as the pivotal player responsible for the good fortunes of the Indiana Fever, including their booking a place in the playoffs. The women’s basketball legend made her thoughts on Clark known, while speaking on the Gilbert Arenas Show earlier this year.
So will Caitlin Clark be a good pro? Absolutely. Will Caitlin Clark come into the WNBA and do what she's doing right now immediately? Absolutely not, not gonna happen.Sheryl Swoopes said
Nonetheless, the records from her rookie season speak for themselves. The Fever guard was named to the WNBA All-Star game as a rookie and finished the season with performances that had many fans clamoring for her inclusion in the USA Women’s basketball team ahead of the Paris Olympics.
