There is no doubt that Indiana Fever veteran Sophie Cunningham has become one of the closest teammates and friends of superstar guard Caitlin Clark.
Before the Missouri native arrived via a trade, she was already seen smiling while engaging in conversation with Clark during the latter’s first-ever All-Star game.
Then, when she finally arrived in Indianapolis, Cunningham made sure she built her relationship with the point guard over the offseason, before then becoming sort of Clark’s protector when the games began.
Roughing up Jacy Sheldon and then taunting the Phoenix Mercury have made the 29-year-old a fan favorite. But it also is an after effect of why the guard feels the need to stand up for her close friend.
Some claim that the former second-round pick has intentionally latched herself onto Clark to gain publicity. Even though it is true that Cunningham has indeed transformed her fortunes in this past calendar year, it does not seem to get in the way of her friendship with Clark.
I don’t even know if I have Paramount+, I probably don’t subscribe to that. So I don’t know if I want to pay for another subscription, and Sophie also didn’t tell me she was doing that… It’s certainly fun, I don’t know, maybe we’ll see her do more of it. Who knows, maybe she will be a UFC fighter at one point.

The Iowa native earned around $16 million last year, but is not willing to add to her subscription list. However, she was happy for Cunningham after she appeared as a ring girl for UFC 329, and even joked about her possibly joining as a fighter later.
Dana White hired Sophie Cunningham 8 minutes before UFC 329
Caitlin Clark mentioned that she was not aware that Sophie Cunningham was going to make her debut as a ring girl, and she believed that neither did her teammate know that was on the cards.

About 8 minutes before she did it. I love Sophie Cunningham, and we’ve created a relationship. She was here tonight, and when she walked in, she goes, ‘Oh, I wanna walk around that.’ I said, ‘Then you’re gonna walk around it.’… She’s fun.
Dana White said
This was the UFC boss’s reply when asked when he decided to hire the Indiana Fever guard to be a ring girl for UFC 329. It seems even he did not have that thought in his mind until Cunningham asked him about it.

White is known for his spontaneity, and that is what led the WNBA star to get her first taste of what it was like to hold up the round number card and walk around the octagon.
Sophie Cunningham rounds off UFC debut with stellar performance against Aces
Sophie Cunningham managed to get this ticked off her to-do list because the Indiana Fever were camped out in Las Vegas ahead of their game against the Aces.
In a game that was tipped to go the home team’s way, the 6’1″ stepped up to ensure her team got its second straight win against the defending champions.
She erupted for 20 points, most of which came in the second half, which allowed the Fever to pull away and create a massive lead. For Cunningham to fuel a charge that saw the Fever win by 34 points helped reinforce the notion that she is on a mission this season.

She may not be shooting at the same efficiency as last season, but her late charge is helping her make a statement of her intent to participate in the All-Star 3-point contest. Moreover, she did that with Dana White in attendance.
