Sophie Cunningham has had quite the season with the Indiana Fever. She came in to lend her grit, tenacious defense, and experience. At the same time, she built a fabulous friendship with Caitlin Clark.
Their close bond went up a notch when the Missouri native defended Clark by manhandling Jacy Sheldon. It was a message to the rest of the league that Cunningham had the most famous women’s basketball players’ back.
The two have since been trolling each other along with ‘Tres Leches’ member Lexie Hull. Their bond was so strong that Clark was seen embracing them before and after games.
The 23-year-old was not present when Sophie Cunningham had to be helped to the medical room after injuring her knee. The recently turned 29-year-old has since been ruled out for the rest of the season after an MRI confirmed that she tore her MCL.
This means the Missouri star will join Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald on the season-ending injury list. Once the news was confirmed, Caitlin Clark decided to send love to her teammate and close friend.
At least we love each other endlessly.

The point guard wrote this on photographer Bri Lewerke‘s Instagram post featuring the injured quartet of Cunningham, Colson, McDonald, and Clark in a slew of photos.

Clark then added that a cruel summer was incoming, as the four of them would be unable to play or practice. Instead, they will be rehabbing until next season starts.
Caitlin Clark and Sydney Colson crack a laugh amidst injuries
There is still speculation about whether Caitlin Clark will return this season. The Indiana Fever is currently 6th in the standings, but faces a string of tough games. Knowing that this season is all but over, Sydney Colson decided to use her trademark humor to lighten the mood.
Ay y’all, Aari McDonald, Caitlin Clark, get a load of this guy Sophie Cunningham.

The 36-year-old was essentially joking about it that Aari McDonald and Clark should start accommodating Sophie Cunningham in their injured players group.

To this, the Iowa native reposted the story and remarked on how unexpected this season has been. The Fever were tipped to be championship contenders after they assembled a deep and star-studded roster.
Over the course of these past 4 months, they lost DeWanna Bonner to waivers, and now 4 players to injury. They might have already thrown in the towel, as it will be difficult to hold on to their playoff spot with a team made up of 7-day contract players.
The Fever could end the 2025 season out of the playoffs
Now that Sophie Cunningham is officially out for the season, the Indiana Fever have 7 players left from their pre-All-Star weekend roster. They have 3 players, of which only Chloe Bibby is on a remaining season contract.
The others, Odyssey Sims and Shey Peddy, were signed on 7-day contracts. This leaves the franchise with 2 more slots to fill. These injuries might prompt the Fever to shut Caitlin Clark for the season.
That would leave them with the option to sign 2 players and keep playing as long as they can. They are currently 6th in the standings with a difficult set of games coming up. The Golden State Valkyries are a game behind, and the Seattle Storm is 1.5 games adrift.
Neither of them has a very favorable schedule, but the Fever’s injury crisis could see them move ahead in the standings. Then there are the Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics, who are 3 games away from catching the Fever.
A few wins for them, coupled with losses for Clark’s team, could see a major shakeup in the playoff seedings. There is a chance that the Indianapolis-based franchise could miss out on the playoffs.
