“That wraps up the ROY 2024!” – Caitlin Clark sets WNBA record despite loss has fans going wild
The previous single season assist record stood at 18.
Caitlin Clark sets WNBA single game assist record despite her Indiana Fever losing
So far in the WNBA season, a few records have tumbled. It is not the established superstars who are doing the honors. Instead, rookies Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have been doing that. Reese has already set one, which has surpassed all WNBA players throughout history. Today was the Indiana Fever rookie’s turn in tonight’s game against the Dallas Wings, which sent fans wild on the internet.
Caitlin Clark and her Fever teammates rolled into Dallas to play their final game before the All-Star and Olympics break. With much rest ahead of her, she went about her business, sending passes to her teammates as they tried to stay in touch with the Wings. As the game went on, she first set the franchise record for assists in a single game. Then, in the 4th quarter, she dished out her 19th assist to set a new WNBA record. She passed Courtney Vandersloot who set it in 2020 with 18 assists.
Clark could have set 20 or more assists had her teammates converted their shots, which also could have helped them win the game. The Wings eventually won the game due to some late elite defense and getting points in the paint. Despite the loss, Clark and her Indiana Fever are in the playoff spots. Had the Indiana Fever won the game, it would have been the perfect icing on the cake.
The record is even more spectacular, considering that Courtney Vandersloot is a pass-first point guard. Whereas Clark came into the league with a reputation for scoring. Vandersloot did it late in her career in a COVID-19 year where she did not play abroad. On the other hand, the Fever guard did it in her rookie season.
Caitlin Clark’s record has netizens losing it on social media
Fans know Caitlin Clark has played basketball non-stop since November with no rest. The first time the 22-year-old can rest will be next week after the All-Star game. So, to dish out 19 assists, score 24 points, and grab six rebounds was a herculean task for someone battling fatigue.
For fans, it further proved the point that she might be already good enough to be a part of Team USA for the Olympics. After this new record, fans had to chime in on social media with their opinions. Check out some of those reactions below;
The one month of rest should help her recover some of her energy and push her to play better. If she continues at this pace, along with the Rookie of the Year, a new WNBA season assist record could be set. Thus, it could establish her firmly as one of the best in the game.
