The Indiana Fever endured a really tough break this year just ahead of what should have been a crowning moment. Having prepared vociferously for hosting the All-Star Weekend with the biggest star in WNBA history in tow, they were made to deal with the absence of Caitlin Clark after she reinjured her groin. Clark had already missed five games for an injury to her groin before she was ruled out after a Sun game.

Nonetheless, with Clark no longer between the lines, she did her best to be a gracious host and raise the Fever’s profile. The organization dealt with some trumped-up charges of racism within the fan base in the early parts of this year and in 2024, stemming off Angel Reese and other opponents. They were able to get through the whole weekend with all of the incoming WNBA All-Stars having a real ball of a time.

The atmosphere was so festive at Gainbridge Fieldhouse that even WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert joined in with a dance of her own. Bt the festivities weren’t the only important thing happening. The players had opted out of the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement ahead of the 2025 season tipoff. This has brought the league office and players to the table to put in place new labor conditions next year.

The players have been putting pressure on the league to share a bigger slice of the pie. Caitlin Clark was also present and has been a vocal leader in demanding more equitable pay for the WNBA players. Yet, she put player politics aside for a short moment to speak glowingly of her organization. The face of the WNBA thanked the Indiana Fever for putting together a huge statement with a successful All-Star weekend:

Incredible weekend in Indy!! Our organization gave everything to make this the best WNBA All-Star Weekend yet—and it delivered in every way. Grateful to call this city home and beyond thankful for the incredible fans who brought the energy and made it special.

Caitlin Clark will be the crux of the WNBA players’ argument for higher pay

It is clear that the WNBA has to find a way to give its stars a bigger share of the league revenue. Currently, the players only receive a paltry 9% of the revenue generated by the league. Although much of this is due to the league’s existing liabilities with their parent organization, the NBA, the players hold a few cards. Due to the advent of Caitlin Clark, interest in the league has reached what marketers would consider an escape velocity.

Clark’s presence has led to burgeoning merchandise and ticketing sales in the past 15 months for the league. This puts the players in an advantageous position for the first time in league history. Their leverage comes with a 110-120% jump in all kinds of basketball-related revenue. The league even signed a broadcast deal that gives it $200 million annually for the foreseeable future after last year’s success.

A likely outcome of these negotiations will be player pay jumping up by at least 250% at all scales from next season. Although this would be a small jump in a vacuum, especially when compared to NBA salaries, the players are still not in a great position to secure a bigger pay hike. Things will be clearer once all the arbitrations are made public ahead of the 2026 WNBA season.
