Caitlin Clark and head coach Stephanie White began trending not because of their second straight loss. Rather, it was their sideline altercation that became a national topic of discussion.

Most fans first fired at the point guard for her behavior. They felt it was a continuation of how she had been acting for the past few games.

Others took a shot at the head coach, with some even asking the Indiana Fever to fire her. They felt that benching the 24-year-old was White crossing the line. They felt that she had been displaying indifferent behavior towards the team’s most important player, and hence, she should go.

Naturally, reporters at the Fever facilities were going to ask the duo about the altercation, and especially these narratives. When it was Caitlin Clark‘s turn, she said:

When I got hurt at the Connecticut game last year, I bawled in Steph’s arms. That is somebody I’ll ride with for the rest of my life. Those are the moments… people don’t see that… They think they know everything, but in reality, they don’t have a clue… She had my back when really nobody else did.

Caitlin Clark replied

This was the Iowa Hawkeyes superstar, effectively ending all the narratives going around that somewhere she and her head coach are beefing with each other.

Clark made it clear that she and White are closer than people think, and that they will have each other’s backs, no matter what. The latter, comforting the guard when she was in tears after suffering an injury, is all anyone needs to know about their relationship.

I was challenging a player. It’s coaching. I don’t often think it becomes an issue if you’re watching it in men’s sports most of the time. My relationship with Caitlin is great. I love Caitlin. I ride with her.

Stephanie White replied

The 48-year-old added that she and her superstar player are very much alike, and that people do not see that. That is why they push each other to be better.

White also added that she and her players have had altercations like this in the past, but since the spotlight is on Clark most of the time, the situation blew up more than was needed.

The former point guard added that people want to create narratives around Clark, as that is what makes them money. Therefore, those opinions should only be taken with a grain of salt. The two Fever employees are in a good space, and there is nothing wrong with their relationship.

Fever teammate reveals Caitlin Clark-Stephanie White altercation did not carry over into locker room

While reporters tried to get every detail out of Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White, Yahoo Sports Daily invited Lexie Hull onto their show to give her insight as to what happened.

That’s part of the game. There’s frustrations that rise… Ultimately, this wasn’t something that carried on, this was in the moment. It is not something that is talked about now in our locker room, or talked about later in the game… This happens almost every day,… so it’s not something we are worried about at all.

Lexie Hull said

The three-and-D expert and Clark’s close friend believes that the spotlight on her teammate is why this incident went viral. Otherwise, such altercations with coaches are a standard affair in women’s basketball.

Moreover, the incident was the only time Clark and White argued during that embarrassing loss to the Portland Fire. That means currently, there is nothing going on between them, and they are focused on stopping their two-game skid.
