In just about two weeks, the WNBA season will resume. Along with that will resume the hottest topic of this season—the race to be the Rookie of the Year. With both Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese battling it out and setting records in the process, the two have jostled back and forth at the top of the race. That said, some have clear favorites. In the instance of Jaylen Brown, he went with what is at the moment close to his heart.
The NBA Finals MVP was asked by Boardroom Talks host Vinciane Ncomsi if he sees anyone from the two as being ahead in the race to be WNBA Rookie of the Year. He replied without thinking twice:
Angel Reese got my vote. I just think you know consistency to come in just double-double after double-double. That's impressive.Jaylen Brown said
Jaylen Brown’s logic is quite clear as Angel Reese has been racking up double doubles and currently holds the WNBA record. But on the other hand, one has to question if that is the sole reason she has his vote.
The reason could be that his heart is currently with former WNBA star Kysre Gondrezick, who also happens to be best friends with Angel Reese. Their friendship grew during their time together at the Chicago Sky. Gondrezick was waived a few games into the season and has since focused on spending time with Brown.
That said, Angel Reese is currently leading the league in rebounds per game and is improving her scoring. Once her efficiency improves, it could lead to higher numbers on the offensive side. Those contributions will be crucial as Caitlin Clark is improving across the board.
Angel Reese’s role should expand in second half of season
Just before the All-Star game, the Chicago Sky made a major move that changed the landscape of their roster. They traded away leading scorer Marina Mabrey to championship contenders Connecticut Sun. In return, they received Moriah Jefferson and Rachel Banham—sharpshooters who can improve their floor spacing.
But what all this means is that Angel Reese will most likely have a bigger offensive load on her. Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon must have noticed that all Reese needs to do is improve her efficiency, as opponents do not have an answer or her awareness around the basket and the way she positions herself to score.
If her efficiency goes up, she should be scoring easily in the 20’s. Therefore, it will mitigate the loss of Mabrey. But more importantly, it will help build the two headed monster along with fellow rookie Kamila Cardoso which is to be their base for their future.
