Caitlin Clark is yet to return to play for the Indiana Fever, and her fans are still waiting to see when and how she performs after suffering a third soft tissue injury. Meanwhile, her teammates are doing their best to keep winning games.

The Fever’s goal is to fight for a championship. They would have preferred if their most important player were guiding them to wins, but it is more important that they manage Clark’s injury properly, to avoid another mishap when it matters.

The Fever are on a four-game road trip, and won the 2nd of them against the Seattle Storm. That makes it 5 wins in a row, and their form could help them continue their climb up the league standings.

Clark’s substitute at point guard, Aari McDonald, has been phenomenal of late. She is scoring 14 points and dishing out 5.4 assists in that span. Those numbers might not be as outstanding as her illustrious teammate’s, but they are enough to get the team to where they want to be.

In the midst of this, Fever fans are raving about their mid-season acquisition, believing it was a phenomenal job by the front office to identify and bring in a player who suits their style. Longtime journalist Jason Whitlock was also happy about this and wrote the following on X.

Any female WNBA fans give me an opinion on Aari McDonalds wig? Looks crazy to me. But I’m no expert.

This might have been his way of trying to show appreciation. However, this comment ended up backfiring after Fever and Caitlin Clark fans unloaded on the 58-year-old Indianapolis native.

Jason Whitlock feels the heat from Caitlin Clark’s fans

He might have written that tweet to appreciate how unreal Aari McDonald‘s hair looks. However, Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever fans were not happy and took their fury out on the sports analyst. They believe his words were inappropriate, as it was directly attacking the point guard’s looks.

They felt that he was intentionally trying to court responses from fans. This distasteful attempt saw fans lambasting the 58-year-old for trying to undermine someone. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Jason Whitlock’s words might have had another meaning. But he forgot that the words have to be placed in a manner that does not leave room for criticism. Had he written his appreciation differently, maybe he would have received a different response.

Jason Whitlock apologizes after Aari McDonald calls him out

Usually, Jason Whitlock speaks about a lot of subjects, both simple as well as controversial, as his show continues to grow in popularity. Many a time, athletes ignore his comments, as it would add to the discourse. But McDonald was not going to let this go.

LOL I usually don’t respond to foolishness like this, but I couldn’t help myself this time. You’re very lame for commenting on a woman’s appearance and for your information it’s not a wig. Don’t make me get Stephen A. Smith. Stay blessed.

Aari McDonald replied

This comment came to the attention of the sports analyst, who then replied:

I’m sorry, Aari. I sincerely apologize. Great victory.

It seems the 58-year-old understood what his words stirred up. For someone who, on most days, has been a Caitlin Clark fan, this situation ended up making it seem as if he is the enemy.

It might take quite a few good posts for those fans to forget about this situation. Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever fans have time and again proved that they are more than willing to defend their players.
