Ever since Caitlin Clark became the best scorer in college basketball history, fans have been waiting for Nike to release her signature shoe. After she signed a record $28 million extension with the sneaker giant, those calls grew louder.

The company, however, could not immediately cave into fan demand. They had to focus first on the best player in the WNBA to avoid a PR disaster. Bringing a rookie’s shoe before that would have enraged a lot of fans.

Nike was aware that the demand for the 23-year-old’s apparel was still high. Once they were done with the launch and public release of A’ja Wilson‘s signature line, they gave fans a teaser by releasing a Kobe Protro special edition in Indiana Fever colors.

That one flew off the shelves, and resellers are commanding a hefty premium. All of these instances point to the fact that the demand for Caitlin Clark’s apparel has not wavered.

Nike CEO Elliott Hill confirmed back in January that their design team was working with the Iowa native. Now, nearly 8 months later, Clark and Nike released her logo via social media.

At first, the logo looks to be a simple design based on two Cs. But the overlap creates a third C, which, according to Nike, is her ‘magnetic connection’ with her fans.

I don’t even have feet, and I’m ready to cop some.

This was the response from one of Caitlin Clark’s global fans, former wheelchair tennis player and Paralympic Gold Medalist, Natalia Mayara. She lost both her legs, but still wants to get her hands on the Fever superstar’s signature shoe. This is just a glimpse of the reach the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year has.

Nike to release Caitlin Clark’s signature apparel this year

At first, one might wonder why Nike would release Caitlin Clark‘s logo when she has missed most of the season due to injury. But the sports apparel giant has a predetermined schedule, which will not change unless the circumstances are unavoidable.

Despite not dribbling a basketball for more than a month, there is no denying the gravitational pull the Fever guard has on her fans. That is probably why Nike decided it was time to reveal the logo.

As per sneaker researcher Nick DePaula, the sportswear giant will launch Clark’s signature apparel collection on October 1st. That is before the signature shoe launches next season.

The timing is well thought out, as it does not overlap with either the additional colorway releases of A’ja Wilson’s A’One or the upcoming release of Sabrina Ionescu‘s third signature shoe.

This leaves the company to focus on Caitlin Clark’s shoe next season, when there should be no other commitments. Expect Nike to go all in as they look to rebound from a trying last few years.

Caitlin Clark could be Nike’s golden ticket to return to its glory days

Nike has been in a bit of a spot over the last few years. Despite essentially dominating most of the sports apparel industry, their sales slowed down, and they had to rethink the way they were doing business.

New CEO Elliott Hill is a company lifer and knows what made the company the best in its industry. He had to be coaxed out of retirement to help the sports apparel giant get back to its glory days.

Maybe he has identified women’s sports as the way to get the company back on track. A’ja Wilson’s A’One launch was a success, as is evident from rumors that they are already working on a second signature shoe.

However, it is no match for Caitlin Clark’s gravitational pull, which was evident when the Kobe Protro Indiana Fever edition sold out the way it did.

It is rare for a special edition to outsell a signature shoe. When factoring in the lack of a generational NBA superstar who can help Nike, it seems the sneaker giant is banking on the Indiana Fever superstar for its return to world dominance.
