When Caitlin Clark came into the WNBA, some were concerned her college accomplishments would not translate to the rigors of the professional league.

Even if many were hopeful, they felt it would take her time to adjust, much like how former college superstar guards turned pros Sabrina Ionescu and Kelsey Plum faced.

After struggling initially, the Iowa superstar started to get a feel for playing against grown women and started to adjust her methods. Then, after the Olympics break, she went on a tear, breaking records of all sorts, and finishing with an All-WNBA 1st team selection.

Many consider Clark’s rookie campaign as one of the best ever from a 1st-year player, and it would take a monumental and consistent effort to break some of those records. This season, some expected No. 1 overall pick Paige Bueckers to be the one.

She has played consistently, and her 44-point explosion led many fans and analysts to believe that Caitlin Clark’s records were not safe. However, injuries have stopped her from playing, which meant the next few picks in this year’s draft got the chance to go after some of those records.

No. 3 pick Sonia Citron has been playing exceptionally well after taking on the leading scorer role once veteran guard Brittney Sykes joined the Seattle Storm before the trade deadline.

The 21-year-old was playing with a lot of freedom than during her time with Notre Dame. That freedom, along with her efficient and consistent scoring, has helped her score in double-digits 36 times this season. This becomes the new rookie record as she has surpassed Caitlin Clark.

Caitlin Clark’s points and assists records are safe, as of now

With this record-setting effort, Sonia Citron has racked up 620 points in her rookie season. The Washington Mystics have just 3 games left in their regular season, which means it is nearly impossible for her to break Caitlin Clark‘s rookie points record.

The Fever guard set a new standard at 769 points last season, which had a tremendous impact on her rookie memorabilia prices. As of now, the collectors who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars will be happy that their investment is safe.

Paige Bueckers also will not be able to break the record, as she will need to score an average of 41 points in the Dallas Wings’ remaining 4 games. Moreover, her close friend and college rival set the record in 40 games, whereas this year’s rookies had 44 attempts to do so.

The next chance someone can break the record is when USC star JuJu Watkins comes into the pros. She is currently hunting the Iowa superstar’s NCAA record, and could do so in the WNBA. But there are at least two years before that happens.

Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen powering Mystics’ rebuild

When the Washington Mystics scouted prospects before the 2025 WNBA Draft, they had one goal in mind. They had to bring in players who can become the new core with which they can build for the future.

When they selected Sonia Citron with the 3rd overall pick, many analysts felt it was more of a safe pick than one that inspires confidence for the future. Their next two picks, No. 4 overall Kiki Iriafen, and No. 6 overall Georgia Amoore, felt more like superstar-caliber prospects.

Iriafen has stayed true to course and was deservedly named an All-Star. But no one envisioned the Notre Dame guard to become equally important to their schemes.

Next season, the Mystics will get back Amoore after she sat out this season with an ACL tear. The dynamic and shifty point guard will be a problem for opposing defenses.

Once they get mid-season trade acquisition Jacy Sheldon acclimated with the team, the Mystics will have a good young core in place. Citron, Iriafen, Amoore, Sheldon, 4th-year center Shakira Austin, Iowa rookie guard Lucy Olsen, and Jade Melbourne make up a promising future for the DC-based franchise.
