In Short
  • Caitlin Clark made a strong return to basketball in her USA senior debut, scoring 17 points and providing 12 assists in just 19 minutes.
  • Despite an eight-month hiatus due to injuries, Clark showcased her skills and chemistry with teammates Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers.
  • Fans are optimistic about Clark's performance setting a positive tone for her upcoming WNBA season with the Indiana Fever.

The last time Caitlin Clark played basketball, fans remembered her leaving the game in tears as her struggles with soft-tissue injuries affected her second season in the WNBA.

Since then, she has tried to return to play but ultimately had to end her campaign when it became clear that her long-term health was more important than helping the Indiana Fever in their playoff quest.

Instead, she cheered her teammates from the sidelines, who surprised everyone by going all the way to the semifinals. After that run ended, Clark reiterated that she was focusing her offseason on rest and recovery before preparing for her USA Basketball senior debut.

That moment has finally arrived, eight months after she last dribbled a basketball. In her own words, she had ‘butterflies’ before her debut. But her performance off the bench was anything but that of a player battling nerves.

The 24-year-old was named on the bench and entered the court with a little more than five minutes in the first quarter. In the first three possessions, the point guard did her role says, which is to assist.

Then, with her fourth touch, she got around a screen and scored her first points wearing the red, white, and blue. After that, Caitlin Clark went on with her pass and score mindset, finishing the game with 17 points, 12 assists, all from just 19 minutes of play.

Fans in awe after Caitlin Clark’s impressive return to basketball

Basketball fans were wary that the eight months of inactivity might force Caitlin Clark to take it easy, particularly in her first game. She did, as head coach Kara Lawson ensured the Indiana Fever superstar only played 19 minutes.

However, fans were not prepared to watch the Iowa native produce a vintage performance. They were left wondering if this was a precedent of what was coming in the 2026 WNBA season. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Admittedly, Caitlin Clark’s double-double came up against an evidently weak Senegal team. However, such games are perfect for someone who needs to get back into playing rhythm.

The guard is the only member of this Team USA contingent in Puerto Rico who has not played professional basketball recently. Their next game against the hosts should be more competitive.

Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers’ connection could be the norm for Team USA’s future

This edition of USA Basketball features no less than six players making their senior debut. However, all eyes were on the trio of Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, who were playing for the first time together.

After the point guard got her rhythm back, head coach Kara Lawson sent the latter two into the game, so that the young trio could build chemistry against arguably one of their weakest opponents in these qualifiers.

Evidently, they did. Clark set up Reese for an easy layup, then later helped Bueckers create space and assisted on her three-pointer. Later, the Dallas Wings guard returned the favor, setting up an open Clark for a three-pointer.

A few plays later, it was the Chicago Sky forward’s turn, setting up a screen to help her college and WNBA ‘rival’ step into space and score an easy three-pointer.

Last but not least, when Caitlin Clark crashed to the floor after a foul off a three-pointer, only for both her fellow ‘Young and Turnt’s’ to come running to help her get up. If this is the start of their chemistry, USA Basketball is in good hands.
