When Caitlin Clark prioritized rest and developmental work over playing in the upstart Unrivaled League, her fans felt she was preparing to go guns blazing in her 2nd season in the WNBA. Believing the same, the Indiana Fever built a star-studded team around her.
The goal was to fight for a championship. The team suddenly had the veteran experience that Clark and her young teammates needed. Now, all that was needed for them to stay healthy and bring forth everything they had been building on.
In Clark’s first few games, she was firing on all cylinders. Then her quad injury dampened that run and forced her to watch from the sidelines. The moment she returned, she again went ballistic, drawing praise from the likes of LeBron James.
After that, she and her teammates became tabloid bulletin material for all the wrong reasons as they literally battled and fought against the Connecticut Sun. Since that game, Caitlin Clark has been struggling with her performances.
In those last three games, Clark has been averaging 12 points per game. What is more concerning is her abysmal three-point shooting efficiency. The superstar is 1-23 from three in those 3 games. When reporters asked her teammate and close friend Lexi Hull about it, the Fever guard replied:
She’ll be fine. We are not worried about it. She’s a great shooter, great player, this happens to every great player.

The Fever guard understands that Caitlin Clark is going through a shooting slump. She pointed out that this slump is something that most great players go through. Therefore, it is not a matter of concern as she expects her superstar teammate to get going soon.
Caitlin Clark set to lose star veteran teammate
When the Indiana Fever brought in veteran players with playoff and championship-winning experience, they targeted those who could help the young players take a leap as well as know what it takes to step up when the lights are bright.
DeWanna Bonner was the choice at small forward. She came with length and elite basketball skills, which would work alongside Caitlin Clark. Their run-and-gun game would complement each other, and Bonner could be one of the late-game scorers the Fever needed.
However, the 37-year-old has missed the last five games due to personal reasons. Front Office Sports’ Annie Costabile spoke with league sources and claimed that Bonner does not want to play anymore for the Fever.
According to multiple league sources, the Indiana Fever and DeWanna Bonner are headed for a breakup.

She wants to leave for either the Phoenix Mercury, where her fiancée Alyssa Thomas plays, or the Atlanta Dream. It is unclear what is driving this decision, but it has placed the Indiana Fever in a difficult situation.
Fever has limited options to replace DeWanna Bonner
The Indiana Fever agreed to let Katie Lou-Samuelson go after she fell back on the depth chart. Now, if DeWanna Bonner leaves, the Indianapolis-based team will be hard-pressed to find a replacement. There is almost no chance that either the Mercury or the Dream trade with the Fever.

Neither will they want to part with one of their better players, nor will the Fever be interested in anyone else from either of those two rosters. Therefore, if the 6-time All-Star leaves, the franchise will struggle to find a replacement.
That replacement should be someone who can run the floor, space out, and keep up with Caitlin Clark’s game. Her piercing passes need players with good hands and awareness. Finding such a player at this stage is difficult.
The only free agent that ticks all the boxes and is an elite player is Belgian Emma Meesseman. She is currently busy with Eurobasket and has indicated that she will decide on her WNBA future after the tournament. The Fever hopes they can do whatever it takes to bring her in.
