“Its COMMON SENSE!” Caitlyn Jenner denies win to transgender swimmer in US women’s College Championships
Caitlyn Jenner, Lia Thomas
In a recent controversy, former Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner has denied a win to a transgender athlete in the US College Swimming Championships. The athlete, Lia Thomas, took a dominant victory in the 500 yard freestyle event over Olympic silver medallist Emma Weyant by over one and a half seconds.
Thomas won the race with a season best time of 4:33.24 seconds, while Weyant came in second setting a time of 4:34.99s. By winning gold, Thomas became the first transgender to win NCAA swimming championship title. Thomas, who is a student at the University of Pennsylvania, has followed all NCAA as well as Ivy League regulations, since she started her hormone replacement therapy in 2019.
“Emma is the Rightful winner,” Caitlyn Jenner mocks transgender athlete Lia Thomas
Upon the result, Weyant received her second place medal with massive applause and appreciation. On the other hand, Thomas did not receive any attention, and accepted gold with utter silence. More over, in response to the NCAA result, Caitlyn Jenner tweeted, “Agreed! She [Weyant] is the rightful winner! It’s not transphobic or anti-trans, it’s COMMON SENSE!”
Despite Thomas actually winning the championship, Weyant will be recognised as a winner in her home town of Florida according to governer Ron DeSantis. “A male identifying as a woman was allowed to compete in and was declared the winner of the race by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and Emma was determined to come in second place,” he said according to sky news. He also added that this result erodes opportunities for female athletes and the public at large.
Jenner has previously also raised concern about transgender athletes competing in sports. “This is a question of fairness. That’s why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls’ sports in school. It just isn’t fair, and we have to protect girls’ sports in our schools,” she said. Jenner herself came out as transgender in 2015, but does not believe that transgenders should be allowed to compete due to inherent advantage.
