“Not the Rightful Winner” Caitlyn Jenner Faces Backlash for Harsh Comments Against Transgender Swimmer

Caitlyn Jenner was recently at the centre of quite the controversy, after she called out a transgender winner of the US Swimming College Championships. Swimmer Lia Thomas recently made the headlines, after becoming the first transgender athlete to win the Women’s NCAA Swimming Championships. She bagged the gold medal ahead of Emma Weyant in the women’s 500 yard freestyle event.

Thomas posted a season best time of 4:33.24s, while Weyant finished with 4:34.99s. However, Thomas faced much backlash on winning, as did not receive a warm welcome when she came to collect her medal. Weyant on the other hand, was appreciated governor Ron DeSantis said that she will be recognised as the true winner of the race in her home town of Florida.

Caitlyn Jenner also tweeted out against Thomas, saying “Agreed! She [Weyant] is the rightful winner! It’s not transphobic or anti-trans, it’s COMMON SENSE!”

Jenner’s insensitive comments have garnered the attention of many, with several believing that the former Olympic champion is in fact transphobic.

What struck other people was the fact that Jenner herself came out as transgender in 2015, but believes that transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete since they have an inherent advantage.
