On Monday, Randy Arozarena went off on his Seattle Mariners teammate Cal Raleigh after the latter declined a handshake during the USA-Mexico game. A day after this, the American international broke his silence regarding this and expressed there was “no beef” between them.
This was a huge game for both teams. With comprehensive victories over Brazil and Great Britain, the two sides entered this game on Monday hoping to continue their winning run and extend their record to 3-0.
History was on the side of the Mexicans. They had not lost to America in the World Baseball Classic since 2006, winning the previous encounters against them.
In this intense game, Arozarena would try to shake hands with Raleigh during his first plate appearance. While the catcher would greet him and claim it was “good to see” him, he declined to shake his hands.

Arozarena did not seem too pleased with this. After his side suffered a 5-3 loss, the 2-time All-Star would go off on his club teammate for his actions. The former Tampa Bay Rays star would use some heavy words in Spanish against Raleigh.
That fake a** “good to see you” he hit me with? He can shove it straight up his a**. I’m out.

How do you think I should respond to Cal Raleigh? How should I put it to him?
I want to say it in four languages.

His words would spark some wild reactions on social media. Several people were left confused and divided on whether this was sarcasm from him or an actual attack.
A day after this viral incident, Raleigh made his feelings known. On a FaceTime call with reporters, the 2025 American League MVP runner-up claimed he hated to see how this situation had unfolded.
I love Randy, I do. I hate that this is a thing. There’s no beef. When we get back to Seattle, he’s my brother. We’re family. I already reached out to him.
Cal Raleigh said regarding Randy Arozarena
Cal Raleigh issued a statement claiming he reached out to Randy Arozarena via text today. He took only one question, but wouldn’t say what “responsibility” to Team USA prompted him to leave his Mariners teammate hanging.

While Raleigh was the home run leader last year with 60 homers. Meanwhile, Arozarena hit a career-high 27 home runs in the 2025 season.
The two of them thus played a key part in the Mariners’ run to the ALCS last year. In the end, they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in the Championship Series in Game 7 and missed out on their first World Series trip.
Cal Raleigh was not the first catcher to snub Randy Arozarena at WBC
Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena found themselves in the spotlight on Monday after the latter spoke out against the former for his handshake snub. He is, though, not the first catcher to decline Arozarena’s at the WBC.

Three years ago, in the 2023 edition, Will Smith did the same. During the matchup between Mexico and the USA, Arozarena would try to fist-bump the American catcher.
The Los Angeles Dodgers star was having none of it and declined to fist bump with him. Even this action sparked some wild reactions on social media with many taking a stand against the catcher.
Throwback to when Will Smith didn’t want to give Randy Arozarena a fist bump when he stepped into the plate because of the rivalry 👀

This is also not the first time in this edition that a catcher has turned down the chance to shake hands with an opposition player. During the game between Australia and Czechia, catcher Robbie Perkins would decline to shake hands with Czechia’s Milan Prokhop. He would later claim there was no malice and just business from his end.

He said it’s just a competitive thing, and nothing personal. If he sees the Czech team at the hotel he’ll check in.

Perhaps this is a catcher thing. Speaking of the WBC, the USA would suffer a huge 8-6 defeat against Italy on Tuesday, which has put their qualification into the next stages in jeopardy.
At the moment, Mexico have a 2-1 record. If they beat Italy by scoring 5 or less runs, they would eliminate the U.S. in the process while qualifying for the knockouts alongside Italy with a 3-1 record.
