Seattle Mariners star Cal Raleigh continued his historic season on Sunday. He hit two home runs against the Athletics at T-Mobile Park. This saw him break the single-season record for the most home runs by a primary catcher by hitting his 48th and 49th home runs of the year.

Raleigh has been in fine form this year. His switch-hitting abilities have made him a formidable opponent to go up against in 2025.

Before the game on Sunday, the 28-year-old was 0-for-7. He broke this hitless run in the first inning with a 2-run shot off Jacob Lopez. The 448ft home run from Raleigh saw him tie the record of Salvador Perez for the most home runs hit by a catcher in a single season at 48.

In the 2nd inning, the “Big Dumper” went deep again. He connected another 2-run home run off Lopez to extend his team’s lead to 5-1. His second home run of the day saw him break the record of Perez and etch his name in the history books. No primary catcher now has more runs (49) ran Raleigh in a single regular season.

Raleigh’s home runs on Sunday were his 39th and 40th while starting behind the plate (he has nine more as the designated hitter). Perez, whose record he broke, had 33 homers while starting as the catcher and 15 as the designated hitter in 2021 while playing for the Kansas City Royals.

As per reports from MLB.com, the overall record for the most home runs in a single season by a primary catcher is 42, set by Atlanta’s Javy Lopez in 2003. Only Todd Hundley (With the Mets in 1996), Roy Campanella (With the Dodgers in 1953), and Mike Piazza (With the Dodgers in 1997 and with the Mets in 1999) have hit 40 home runs in games played as the primary catcher.

Cal Raleigh hoping to become 3rd Marines star to win AL MVP award

This year, the hunt for the top individual honor has been a top-way race between him and reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge. Throughout the entire season, the two stars have been compared with each other, and there have been several debates on who would take the prize.

Despite trailing him in the home runs category, Judge is still considered the favorite to win the award. For Raleigh to win this award and topple the Yankees captain, he would certainly need his side to reach the postseason.

If Raleigh wins the award, he would join MLB Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr. and Ichiro Suzuki as the 3rd Mariners star to claim this honor. Griffey Jr. won this award in 1997, while Suzuki claimed this honor in his debut season in 2001.
