It appears the 2024 first-overall pick was victim to catfishing by a couple of kids on the internet. He is all for sharing the experience in his appearance on the St. Brown Brothers podcast.
The Chicago Bears are on a hunt for a new head coach after firing Matt Eberflus in the regular season. While some candidates have been shortlisted, rookie Caleb Williams was convinced that Detroit Lions coordinator Ben Johnson had been hired for the position.
Last Friday, he received a text on his phone from Johnson himself– or whom he thought was Johnson, telling him that he would accept the head coach position at the Windy City. It was apparently a courtesy message to the young quarterback since the Bears have been focused on his development while searching for head coach; before the news officially gets released.

These kids convinced Caleb Williams that they were Ben Johnson and he FaceTimed them 💀 pic.twitter.com/WLd30YBOs5
To confirm, he wrote, “Actually? Ben,” and received the response affirming that it was indeed Johnson, who wanted Williams to be the first to know about this news. Williams was almost convinced that it was Johnson texting him until he hopped on a FaceTime with the messenger only the find out that it was a couple of kids pulling a prank on him.
Caleb Williams shares laughs over viral prank
After the clip recording by those young kids went viral on the internet, including the screenshot of their conversation with the Bears quarterback, he confirmed that the story was hilariously true. And the most interesting thing is the Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown also played his part in the story.
It appears Williams was skeptical about the message as he received no information from the franchise. So, he texted St. Brown to confirm that it was indeed Johnson’s number and that he received such messages from “these random dudes,” but Brown firmly dismissed it, saying, “F**k outta here. Ben ain’t coming to Chicago.” But by the time Williams tried to explain, St. Brown was off his phone and when he saw the quarterback’s message, he had already been catfished.
"I was trying not to flip out because I knew they were probably recording. So I was trying to keep my cool, but when I got off the phone I was fuming."

It remains unclear how those kids got their hands on Williams’ phone number, as the message they sent closely resembled an official one, as he explained. To avoid similar situations in the future, he has decided to change his phone number.
