When the Chicago Bears drafted Caleb Williams in 2024, they hoped he would lead a rebuilt team to the playoffs. The front office had brought in a lot of good players, hoping it would be enough to turn their fortunes around.
The USC star QB came in hoping for the same, and initially it all seemed to be fine. They won four out of their first six games and many felt it was a good starting point. But some problems concerning the offensive line, running game and schemes were starting to catch analyst’s attention.
They believed Williams and his Bears need to fix those issues if they were to compete for wins. Two losses followed, but no one was panicking. Then a bad loss to the New England Patriots brought up even more questions surrounding the team’s ability to win football games.
Three close losses to the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, all playoff caliber teams, suggested the Bears were close to turning their season around. But they could not, and the losses continued to the extent that they lost hope.
I’ll be honest with you. I’ve never lost this much. I lost ten games in one season. I think maybe eleven. It’s actually more than eleven. When I got home, I got in my bed. I just dropped a few tears. And I was just so beat-up mentally, physically, spiritually.

This was the response Esquire‘s Brian O’Keefe received from Caleb Williams when he pressed him about the losses. His answer dives into how a serial winner for most of his life felt when he ended up becoming a serial loser. From his words, it is evident that those 12 losses broke him.
Caleb Williams trying to bring his competitive side
Heading into season two, Caleb Williams would want to wipe away those tears and return to winning football games. He knows some of his fellow draftees will have similar goals. Even though the goals are similar, the Chicago Bears quarterback believes he tries to keep his distance.

I think the NFL game has become very friendly, and I don’t necessarily want to be friends, because I want to keep that competitive advantage.

The 23-year-old has seen players from his generation form an unofficial fraternity in the NFL. But he prefers if he is not friends with them as he wants to beat them every week. The former USC star wants to harp back to the days when players were not friends.
Other quarterbacks have tried to console him after a loss. So far, he has put on a brave face even though he did not feel like listening to them. Williams knows they are great people who just want to uplift everyone. But he wants to win against them and thus does not want to build personal relations with them.
Williams acknowledges he has work to do
Caleb Williams came in with a lot of hype. Some analysts believed he was going to have a better rookie season than CJ Stroud. But it all fell flat due to the overall underperformance from the Bears. After receiving some criticism about failing to take accountability, he revealed where he has to improve.
Processing, and then taking more checkdowns, and then footwork. I think those three are big for my game that I’m going to be working on.

The DC native admits that he has to learn a lot and improve, but at the same time, he also knows that he has the talent to succeed in the NFL. The Chicago Bears went ballistic in free agency and hired famed coordinator Ben Johnson as their next head coach.
Hopefully, those changes will help Caleb Williams prove his worth. The franchise wants to win and if Williams works on those deficiencies, they have a shot at giving other teams a run for their money. Maybe after that, his tears will turn into joy.
