Caleb Williams played amicably in the Week 14 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He threw 19 completions on 35 attempts for 186 yards, scored two touchdowns, and added 15 more yards with his feet.

The Bears trailed by seven points after the Packers scored through running back Josh Jacobs. There was still time for the Bears to snatch a late victory. Fans stayed seated in the bleachers because they had previously seen Williams win games at the death.

Unfortunately, the second-year signal-caller came up short. With just ten seconds left in the fourth quarter, Williams’ pass was intercepted by Keisean Nixon in the end zone, resulting in a 28-21 victory for the Packers.

Williams and the Bears found themselves in a similar situation just two weeks later at Soldier Field. The game went to overtime thanks to rookie Jahdae Walker‘s first touchdown of his NFL career. Williams then completed the turnaround when he connected with DJ Moore for a 46-yard touchdown pass.

After the game, cameras caught a pumped-up Williams conversing with wide receiver Rome Odunze (didn’t play due to a foot injury) and DB Tyrique Stevenson.

I told you I got it, didn’t I!!! I told you I got it.

Caleb Williams told Odunze, who shouted “Iceman” at him

By Iceman, Odunze referred to Williams’ celebration after the Moore touchdown.

It was Williams’ sixth game-winning drive of the season, tying with Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. He ended the game with 19 completions for 250 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 30 yards on the ground. Moore caught 5 passes for 97 yards and one score. Running back D’Andre Swift rushed 13 times for 58 yards, while Kyle Monangai had 9 carries for 50 yards.

The Bears improved to 11-4 and clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2020, when they finished with an 8-8 record.

Caleb Williams played a big part in the Bears’ clinching a playoff spot

Fans and analysts were quick to write Williams off after a 5-12 debut season. The Bears’ ownership made notable changes in the offseason. They appointed former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as the head coach.

Johnson arrived in Chicago with an impressive CV. He helped Jared Goff establish himself as a top ten quarterback and enjoyed back-to-back NFC North triumphs.

There were a few hiccups at the start of the season, but Johnson installed a winning culture in Chicago. It bore fruit quickly, and now they are playoff-bound.

Williams has benefited the most. Although it’s unlikely he will meet his goal of averaging 70% completions (he’s currently at 57% with two games left), and still has a long shot at throwing 4000 passing yards. In 15 games, the former Heisman winner has thrown for 3400 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just 6 picks.

It’s an impressive turnaround by Williams, but the job isn’t finished, according to Johnson.

That was Step 1. Step 2 is we want to win this division, we want to have at least one home playoff game. And then Step 3 would be clinching the No. 1 seed. So, there’s a lot of things still out there to play for.

Ben Johnson said this week

In Week 17, the Bears face the 11-4 San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium before concluding the regular season by hosting the Lions on the final day.
