The Chicago Bears have become the laughingstock of this NFL season after Matt Eberflus‘ timeout blunder with a chance to tie. Caleb Williams had a chance to reset the lead before attempting another touchdown. Even if that had failed, they could have handed it over to their field goal team. But instead, the Detroit Lions won that close game.

Matt Eberflus has been taking heat left right and center for his decision to not use that last timeout. He let those precious 32 seconds bleed out to lose the game 23-20. To make matters worse, the head coach suggested that he was happy with their game plan.

But in that statement, he seemingly directed blame at his rookie QB for not being able to execute their gameplan. Caleb Williams had a different thought when reporters asked him about the not calling a timeout.

In that situation, I’m living with the call, and I’ll let coaches make that decision…. Whatever that situation is, that’s going to be coach’s call. Maybe in the later years of my career, but right now I get the call and I’m trying to lead my team to a win.

Caleb Williams said on the uncalled timeout

Williams tried hard to avoid these words all throughout the first part of the post-game press conference. However, reporters kept changing their sentences and did not give him time to think led him to say this. His words hint two situations.

One being that as a rookie QB, he did not have the luxury to call a timeout. Second was that his head coach did not do his job of making the decision and stopping the clock while it was bleeding out. If anything, this indicates there is a gap in understanding between Eberflus and his players.

Caleb Williams sees another rally go in vain

This was the second game in a row when the Chicago Bears had the chance to tie the game against playoff teams but still lose. The last one against the Minnesota Vikings was unfortunate, as the former USC star blew the brakes off to rally his team to a tie.

In this game, the standout Detroit Lions defense stopped the Bears from scoring any points in the first half. But coming out in the second, it was the visitors that turned the game on its head. After Jared Goff‘s second touchdown in the 3rd quarter, they went quiet.

In that time, Williams decided to turn on the heat and stormed his team to three touchdowns. When at such a hot streak, going their way, Matt Eberflus should have called the timeout and try at tying the game. They were in a better position to win the game, considering the Lions offense had gone cold.
