Another highly anticipated match didn’t go as planned, given that Caleb Williams failed to make much impact despite the 24-17 victory in the season-opener against the Tennessee Titans. Since the match on Sunday, the rookie quarterback’s old text to the Chicago Bears’ punter has resurfaced on the internet and has gone viral.
Shortly after getting drafted as the first overall pick, the former USC standout sent a text message to punter Tory Taylor assuring him that he wouldn’t have to punt as much as he used to. However, the season-opening game portrayed a different story. While the offense was struggling miserably, the team’s defense and special teams came forward to save the day in the second half.
Contributing to the victory as the opponents also highlighted, the Bears punted six times which totally contradicted Williams’ words of giving the defense a little rest with him handling the offense. The Titans also exclaimed that they would have won if they punted on first down on every offensive possession as they should.
The Bears struggled to establish the offensive rhythm throughout the match particularly in the majority of the first half when they put zero points on the board while their opponents, the Titans were in the lead at 17-0. Williams finished the game with 14 out of 29 passing for 93 yards and a passer rating of 55.3 along with five carries for 15 yards.
HC Matt Eberflus backs rookie QB Caleb Williams despite Week 1 struggles
As much as the critics are highlighting where the rookie quarterback failed to contribute to his team’s success, head coach Matt Eberflus came in his defense saying that if he had put the team in a difficult position as his critics claimed, then his team would have also failed to showcase their prowess. Additionally, Williams didn’t record any interceptions or lose any fumble in the game.
The team around him played better in the second half. We said, you need to keep doing that as he grows and develops because he is a talent. He’s smart as a whip and knows the offense. And we’ve just got to keep playing well around him as he grows and reinvests and improves.Matt Eberflus said
Although Williams didn’t perform in week 1 as he had hoped, he would indeed gain the rhythm of the league to reinvent himself accordingly. As for now, the quarterback took the responsibility for his performance and admitted that he missed a few such passes which he wouldn’t do generally.
