Questions were raised after Ben Johnson did not field Caleb Williams in the Chicago Bears’ preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. Fans wanted to see Williams’ growth under Johnson’s tutelage.

Johnson heard their cry and decided to play Williams from the start in the second preseason game against another AFC East side, the Buffalo Bills. The 23-year-old did not disappoint.

Williams led a 93-yard drive that ended with a 36-yard touchdown pass to receiver Olamide Zaccheaus, who came in during the offseason from the Washington Commanders.

Johnson let Williams stick around for one more drive, but it ended in a punt. Tyson Bagent replaced him two minutes before the first quarter ended. Williams finished with 6 completions from 10 attempts for 107 yards and one touchdown.

Bears fans rave about Caleb Williams’ first-quarter performance against the Bills

The Bears’ offseason started with significant doubts about Johnson’s abilities as a head coach. This was his first gig as the main man, and rookie coaches don’t have a great track record of developing young quarterbacks, especially in Chicago.

Johnson knew that he was taking on a tough task when he signed the contract. The OTAs went without much fuss. However, issues began popping up during the training camp.

Footage from the camp exposed Williams struggling to adapt to Johnson’s ways. It was clear that he required time to learn the playbook.

Bears fans feared the worst when Williams did not take a single snap in the first preseason game. Their opinion quickly changed after Williams connected with Zaccheaus for a first-quarter touchdown on Sunday at Soldier Field.

The party in the windy city wasn’t over. De’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai were rested for the fixture, so the responsibility of the backfield fell to Brittain Brown and Ian Wheeler—both scored one touchdown each before Bagent set up third-year receiver Tyler Scott for a touchdown pass—all in the first quarter.

Wheeler punched in his second of the night midway through the fourth quarter after undrafted second-year quarterback Austin Reed handed him the ball on third and four.

The game ended in a 38-0 blowout victory for the Bears and the first in the Ben Johnson era.

After the game, Caleb Williams walked the reporters through his first touchdown of the preseason.

The weak safety rotated back… Cole saw it and did a great job, seeing the middle field open and made the adjustment on the route, other than [I] just dropped back and threw a nice bole to Cole.

Williams needs his second year to be better than his rookie season. In 2024, the former first overall pick completed 351 passes from 562 tries for 3541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He further added 489 yards on 81 carries. However, he was the most sacked player in the entire league (68), causing him to fumble the ball 10 times and lose it on 5 occasions.

If Williams plays in the final preseason game, then it will be his biggest test yet this year. The Bears are set to travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs before hosting the Minnesota Vikings in week one of the 2025 NFL regular season.
