The Chicago Bears’ second-year quarterback Caleb Williams had a forgettable year as a rookie. The Bears, after an initial high, succumbed to continuous losses to finish the season fourth in the NFC North.

The Bears returned to camp on Tuesday as they look forward to shedding the bad memories of the past season. They went into full action mode in the offseason, bringing in the most sought-after head coach, Ben Johnson, and upgrading the offensive line to protect Caleb Williams better.

The quarterback, however, has sustained some setbacks. The woes of the Chicago fans remain unsettled as Williams hasn’t been up to par in the camp yet.

During Thursday’s third practice, Williams was intercepted on a red zone 7-on-7 throw intended for DJ Moore. While the pass was low, it bounced off Moore’s hands, deflected off defenders, and was ultimately picked off by Jaquan Brisker, who returned it the other way.

On the very next play, Williams made another mistake, failing to put enough loft on a throw to the back of the end zone, allowing TJ Edwards to leap and grab a second interception. At one point during 7-on-7 drills, Williams missed eight consecutive throws.

On Wednesday, a similar situation had arisen where Johnson became too frustrated after a mistake. During their first 11-on-11 session, Williams threw an interception on his very first snap and was picked off by linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. The head coach pulled the entire offensive unit off the field and sent in the backups. After all, he’s willing to go to extreme lengths to bring home a Super Bowl.

As camp convenes today for the last time before a short Sunday break, the Bears would want to set some good improvements.

Colin Cowherd blasts Caleb Williams and the Bears for the mistakes

On Friday’s episode of The Herd, Colin Cowherd addressed mounting concerns around the former No. 1 overall pick. He highlighted the numerous errors and signs from training camp that suggest Williams might not be progressing as quickly as expected.

A year back, Cowherd had named Williams as a generational talent after his Heisman win and eventual first overall pick. However, Cowherd isn’t so sure anymore.

Caleb Williams was sold as a generational talent. We were all hoping it would be this generation. How long do you want us to wait?

Yet, early signs from training camp have been mixed. Cowherd noted that red zone struggles and lapses in footwork are small concerns that could snowball quickly if not addressed. He added that the timeframe for proving themselves isn’t as long as it once was. The teams and the fans expect quick results, although they are detrimental to development of young quarterbacks.

Quarterbacks in 2025 are like streaming shows. If you’re not getting me by the second episode early, I’m out. You used to give Eli Manning three years — those days are over. Caleb Williams has to be good by late September or early October.

There’s a higher bar set by Williams for himself. He admitted his wish to become the franchise’s first-ever quarterback to throw more than 4000 yards. The QB also expects himself to complete more than 70% of his throws. The completion goal is shared by the coach as well.

Ben Johnson told reporters that he expects Williams to complete 70% of his throws. The sophomore NFL QB had a completion rate in the low 60s last season. There’s no doubt that an increase to 70% would translate to better results and scorelines.

The Chicago Bears will open their 2025 season at home against the Vikings on September 8. If Williams is indeed the franchise quarterback Chicago believes he is, the proof may need to come sooner rather than later.
