Any rookie quarterback will jump for joy if anyone compares them with three-time Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes, unless that QB is Caleb Williams. The Chicago Bears starter appreciates the comparison from football fans to one of his idols, but his goal is to be the best version of himself.

On Saturday, Williams started for the Bears as they faced off against the Bengals in their third pre-season game. The 22-year-old had a slow day but showed flashes of brilliance.

He finished the game with 6/13 for 75 passing yards, 1 carry, and 1 rushing touchdown late in the second quarter. The game finished with the Bears securing a comfortable 27-3 victory.

During the post-match press conference, the reporters asked him about fans on social media comparing him with Patrick Mahomes, whom he will face in the Bears’ final pre-season game next week.

Williams claimed the comparison was flattering, but his aim isn’t imitating anyone else; rather, he wants to be the first Caleb Williams and win trophies with the Chicago Bears.

It’s respect [and] it’s cool and all, but, you know, I am Caleb Williams, Patrick Mahomes is Patrick Mahomes, and Tyreek Hill is Tyreek Hill. Much love to them for things like that—met them [and] talked to them for things like that—but we are here to win games for the Chicago Bears. Awesome!

Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze working extra hard to catch up with the veterans on the Bears team

The reason players like Tyreek Hill see Mahomes in Williams is because of his connection with Rome Odunze, whom the Bears drafted 9th overall a few months earlier. It’s only the preseason but still generated a highlight reel that should make Bears fans giddy.

Later, when both were asked about it separately, Williams confessed he could have placed the ball better, while Odunze loved the attempt from his quarterback. They click well together and work hard for it.

We’re going to be explosive. We’re two rooks, but we’re trying to catch up [to the old guys] as fast as we can to make sure that we are right there on par with them to be able to be efficient, function, go out there, and be explosive.

The Bears have one more preseason game remaining before the 2024 campaign. They will travel to Arrowhead Stadium next week to face Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
