NFL fans should start getting used to seeing Caleb Williams paint his nails. The Heisman Trophy winner has come under fire over the past few weeks for his unusual habit.

Yet it’s nothing new for Williams. He would routinely show up with colored nails during matchday and even at press conferences. This wasn’t a problem until he hit a purple patch, going through a rough period in which the USC Trojans lost three games on the bounce and failed to reach the playoffs.

Williams was already a target for the online troll army after he was seen crying following the Trojans defeat against Washington. So they would nitpick every little detail, making it a massive issue.

After announcing for the NFL Draft, the intensity of the social media trial increased. So when he showed up wearing pink nail polish at a local basketball game, Williams was ridiculed for his preference and style of life.

However, it did little to deter him from painting his nails. Instead, he announced that it helps him stay calm and focused in games.

To show how serious he was, Caleb Williams attended the 2024 NFL Draft on Thursday at Detroit’s Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza wearing silver nail paint on his pinkie fingers.

Caleb Williams’ journey to becoming the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft

As predicted, the Chicago Bears exercised their rights for the first pick (via the Carolina Panthers) and selected Caleb Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft. Williams was considered the top prospect in a quarterback-heavy draft, including Jayden Daniels (2023 Heisman Trophy Winner), Drake Maye, and JJ McCarthy (National Champion).

Williams appeared in 37 college games with 33 starts over three seasons at Oklahoma (2021) and USC (2022–23). He completed a staggering 66.9% of his passes, registering 9,782 yards with 93 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Not only was he good with his arm, but he was also efficient with his feet, rushing for 966 yards and 27 TDs on 289 carries.

2022 was arguably his best season, with 4,537 yards 42 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 382 yards and 10 TDs on 113 carries with the ball. Williams bagged several accolades that year: the Heisman Trophy and both the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award as college football’s best player.

The Bears had already traded their last-year starting quarterback, Justin Fields, to the Pittsburgh Steelers to make way for Williams. Furthermore, they added former Washington speedster Rome Odunze as the 9th pick of the draft.

Previously, they had added veteran All-Pro wide receiver Keenan Allen to add some experience to the offense. Along with Allen, the Bears have DJ Moore and tight-end Cole Kmet. This should be mouthwatering for the Windy City folks.
