The Houston Cougars handed the Colorado Buffaloes their second loss of the season while maintaining a crisp record for themselves with three wins in three games. The Cougars, who play in the Big 12 conference, previously earned victories over the SFA Lumberjacks and the Rice Owls in weeks one and two of the season respectively.
The Buffaloes, on the other hand, suffered their first loss in the first game against Georgia Tech before getting back on track against the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens. However, that momentum diminished as the Cougars steamrolled them.
The embarrassing loss and the 1-2 start haven’t gone unnoticed. The Buffs HC Deion Sanders was dumbfounded for words during his post game press conference:
It wasn’t good. I’m at a loss for words. No one could have told me that it was gonna turn out like this.
He didn’t stop there. The former Dallas Cowboys legend ripped into their performance while taking the responsibility for the mortifying performance from his team.
I take full responsibility of the foolishness that went on out there that we tried to name football. We tried to call it football. It wasn’t that. We’ve got to do better in every phase of the game. We’ve got to do better preparing our kids. We’ve got to do better, period.

He also admitted that the team was far from struggling, that they were worse than that. Cougars QB Conner Weigman threw 15-of-24 for 222 yards while rushing for 83 yards and 2 touchdowns. Dean Connors had 22 carries for 89 yards and one rushing TD. Ethan Sanchez secured five field goals from six and registered 18 points.
On the flip side, the Buffs QB Ryan Staub was limited by the Cougars’ defense and intercepted twice. The Buffs defense was not able to do much either as the Cougars beat them 36-20.
Deion Sanders has no answers for the Buffaloes’ quarterback troubles
Deion “Prime” Sanders is searching for solutions after another uneven performance from his quarterbacks in the Buffaloes’ Big 12 Conference opener. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Staub earned his second career start but failed to build on his promising outing from the previous week.

Despite flashes of potential, Staub struggled with accuracy and timing, often misfiring with his receivers. Omarion Miller and Joseph Williams led the team with just over 50 receiving yards apiece, while Dre’lon Miller contributed three catches for 23 yards. Sanders was very blunt about Staub in his postgame conference, as he was about the whole team.
Staub didn’t play well. I saw what you saw. He did not play well today. That wasn’t his best, to say the least.
The Buffaloes’ offensive struggles were compounded by a shaky supporting cast. Outside of Simeon Price’s 38-yard touchdown run, the ground game was ineffective, and the offensive line allowed three sacks and seven tackles for loss. Too many first-down plays stalled before they began, leaving Staub in difficult situations.
Colorado’s defense kept the game within reach early, but Houston capitalized on the Buffs’ offensive misfires to pull away late. Now 1–2, the Buffaloes face Wyoming next Saturday with their quarterback picture as murky as ever. Sanders admitted he has no immediate plan.
I have no idea right now. Right now, I am not thinking about that. I am thinking about what transpired and how we can prevent it from happening again. I am trying to self-analyze me first. What can I do better?
It's a new day for Deion Sanders and Colorado without Shedeur Sanders under center 😅

The options Sanders has are former starter Kaidon Salter and freshman Julian “JuJu” Lewis. One thing is sure: the Sanders era in Colorado is crumbling in the absence of Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, strict dress code or not.
