Former NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson praised the Los Angeles Rams’ quarterback Matthew Stafford and made his case for MVP. Johnson, who played nine seasons for the Detroit Lions, also commented that the MVP honors would cement Stafford’s chances of being named in the Hall of Fame.

Ahead of the Rams’ game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Johnson told TMZ Sports that Stafford is currently playing good football and boasts a quality team around him at the Rams. Johnson praised the receiver team and the offensive line as well.

He then went on to add that Matthew Stafford has Hall of Fame talent and noted his previous achievements in football

Matthew has a Hall of Fame talent, 100%, Matthew’s able to add that Super Bowl to his resume, which is what you look for in the Hall of Fame quarterback. So that’s one huge bar that he was able to hop over.

Calvin Johnson said

Matthew Stafford left the Detroit Lions in 2021 and joined the Rams, where he led the franchise to its second Super Bowl win, the first since relocating from St. Louis. The high-earning quarterback finished the season with 4,886 passing yards and 41 passing touchdowns. He was ranked third in passing yards, behind Tom Brady and Justin Herbert, and second in passing touchdowns.

Johnson reflected on the achievement and the way Stafford won his maiden title while also taking a jab at the Lions’ culture around that time.

The way he did it as well. Leaving Detroit and doing it in his first year with a better culture, a better team, with better players around him. He just wanted to show that we had the guy in Detroit the whole time.

Johnson and Stafford played together in Detroit from 2009, when the latter was drafted by the Lions, till 2015, when Johnson retired. They made the playoffs twice during their time together but were eliminated by the New Orleans Saints (2011) and Dallas Cowboys (2014) in the Wild Card playoffs.

Matthew Stafford threw 22-of-31 passes and completed 281 yards. He found Puka Nacua twice and Colby Parkinson once for 3 total touchdowns. Stafford is a leading contender for MVP honors with 3,354 passing yards and leads the league with 35 touchdowns. Dak Prescott, who’s second in passing touchdowns, has only 26 touchdowns.

Blake Corum rushed 12 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and Kyren Williams ran the ground 13 times for 84 yards and a touchdown. The Rams rose to 10-3 and are ahead of the Seattle Seahawks with similar numbers due to their tighter strength of schedule.

The Chicago Bears, on the other hand, lost to the Green Bay Packers. The Packers, led by strong offensive and defensive performances, edged out the Bears 28-21 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. The win against the Bears helped the Packers to the top of the NFC North and took the Bears’ divisional spot in the playoffs.

Similarly, the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Atlanta Falcons 37-9 and rose to 10-3. The San Francisco 49ers, having a better strength of schedule in the games, also triumphed over the Bears last week.

The Bears have dropped to the seventh spot in the NFC seedings. The NFC race has tightened with the Detroit Lions securing a win against the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys now have just a six percent chance to make the playoffs.

The NFC South battle has also intensified following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ loss to the New Orleans Saints, and with the Carolina Panthers’ last week’s win over the Falcons, both teams are tied at 7-6. The two teams meet twice in the remaining four weeks, setting up an intense final battle.
