Every football player has a favorite number they prefer wearing on their jerseys. Whether that stems from superstitions or just preference, that’s anyone’s guess. Even Cam Newton is no exception.
Shortly after the Carolina Panthers drafted the Auburn graduate in 2011, Newton asked his teammate Jimmy Clausen for the No. 2 jersey. It’s the number he has worn since his school days in Atlanta.
The equipment manager advised Newton to ask Clausen directly if he would like to switch. However, Clausen demanded a million dollars for the number, which Newton thought was outrageous.
During a recent one-on-one with Shannon Sharpe on the Club Shay Shay podcast, the 34-year-old revealed that he had promised himself that no one would ever hear the name of Jimmy Clausen again.
Mfs don’t even make a million dollars in their lifetimes where I’m from. You think I’m about to give you a million dollars for a number? And the crazy thing about that. The following year, after I chose No. 1, he went to No. 7.Cam Newton told Shannon Sharpe
This wasn’t the first time Newton spoke of it. Previously, he went to the ‘2Cool2Blog’ show and said the same.
He be like, 'Sh*t, if you want it, you gotta pay for it.’ I was like, ‘Cool, how much?’ He said ‘a million'. I said, ‘Boy, kiss my as*.Newton had said back then
Clausen reportedly bargained once he realized Newton was infatuated with the number. He went down to $750,000, but Newton did not bite.
The career trajectory of Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen
Clausen joined the Panthers in the second round a year earlier than Newton. He was rushed into the squad after Matt Moore ended up in the hospital following a concussion.
After going 1–9 as the Panthers’ starting quarterback in his rookie season, Clausen stayed with the team for three more seasons without playing in any games. His rookie year ended with 3 touchdowns and 9 picks, which saw Jon Beason relieved of duties as head coach. Clausen later served as a backup for the Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Ravens during parts of the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
The Panthers appointed Ron Rivera and entrusted the quarterback role to Cam Newton. Although the year ended with a 6-10 record, he threw for more than 4000 yards (the best in his career), bagging the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
He eventually played eight seasons for the Panthers, reaching the 2015 Super Bowl, which they lost, but Newton was named the MVP. After leaving Carolina, he spent one year with the New England Patriots and then returned to the Panthers.
2021 was the last time Cam Newton last played ball in the league, in which he lost all five games he played. He hasn’t announced his retirement and recently expressed his desire to play for the Atlanta Falcons.
