The Buffalo Bills have been part of a few unexpected results in the ongoing season. They started strong by defeating the Ravens on opening day. However, they struggled in prime-time games, losing to the Patriots and the Falcons. This inconsistency has cost them important points. These outcomes pale in comparison to the Josh Allen-led team’s latest disappointment.

The week ten game in Miami seemed like a formality as the Bills were coming off a win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Allen’s spotless game left a big impression on Chiefs coaches.

However, a week later, the Bills suffered a 13-30 defeat at the hands of the Miami Dolphins, a team they had comfortably beaten earlier in the season. Turning the ball over three times seldom leads to a win, even if the opposition is one of the worst teams in football.

Speaking on the latest episode of ESPN’s First Take, Cam Newton singled out Josh Allen as the main culprit behind the Bills’ lackluster performance in Miami.

I’m going with Joshua Allen, and it’s not even close. I think last year’s success recipe is not this year’s success recipe. Last year, we were all questioning Brandon Bean’s decision not to give Josh a number one receiver with the removal of the Stefan Diggs.

In 2024, the Bills drafted Keon Coleman and picked up Joshua Palmer and Elijah Moore in the offseason to strengthen their wide receiver group. However, Newton questioned whether Allen truly trusts his receivers.

Where’s Keon Coleman? Where are these guys [who are in the position to make plays?] … When you don’t have the same production at the receiver position, and this year now puts the onus on Josh Allen, and you add in turnovers, and you add in bad decision making, that’s how you get to a point now where it’s extremely alarming.

Newton quipped

Khalil Shakir leads the Bills receivers with 45 receptions for 457 yards and 3 touchdowns, followed by tight end Dalton Kincaid with 29 catches for 448 yards and 4 touchdowns. Coleman has 32 catches for 330 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Bills are set to miss Kincaid for the foreseeable future. He exited the Dolphins game after suffering a hamstring injury in the third quarter, as per Banged Up Bills.

A big setback for Josh Allen and the Bills

Allen and the Bills started as massive favorites to secure a seventh win of the season by defeating the Dolphins. The Bills also had the recent history on their side. During the week three showdown in Buffalo, Allen threw 3 touchdowns and completed 78% of his passes in a 31-21 victory.

Moreover, last week’s win over the 2024 AFC first seed was also a great confidence booster. Allen played some of his best football, scoring a 3 total touchdowns and finishing with a quarterback rating of 131.57.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, had won just two games all year and played without star receiver Tyreek Hill. As it turned out, they did not need him. WR2 Jaylen Waddle and running back De’Von Achane put on a show in front of a generous turnout at Hard Rock Stadium.

Waddle and Achane jointly added 3 touchdowns, while Malik Washington scored one to cause a 30-13 Sunday night upset.

Allen completed 70% of his passes, threw 2 touchdowns, but also conceded one interception (three turnovers in total) to cap off a horrible outing.

I gotta be better. I gotta be better in the protection game and the pass game and the run game, all of it. Anytime you turn it over three times, two in the red zone… And really, you could count that last one driving, kind of going into the red zone — so that’s a recipe for disaster.

The Bills have a tricky matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week. They may be the favorites, but it would be unwise to underestimate a team that came close to beating the current AFC second seed, the New England Patriots.
