Cam Newton called out by JR Smith for spreading Dwight Howard rumors
There have been many speculations about Dwight Howard during and after his career. One of the most prominent, however, has been the question about his sexuality. During a recent interview on his podcast, former NFL MVP Cam Newton brought out Howard’s ex-girlfriend to answer the question, although not everyone seems to be a fan of Newton’s pursuits.
On a recent episode of his Funky Friday podcast, Cam Newton brought on former Basketball Wives star Royce Reed onto the show. Reed is also famously Dwight Howard’s ex-girlfriend. While much of the show focused on her relationship with Howard, former NBA champion JR Smith took issue with the way the episode was geared for engagement, with the emphasis on probing Howard’s sexuality.

In the Instagram comments under Newton’s post, Smith promptly questioned Cam Newton’s intentions to put down Dwight Howard by probing to find out from his wife whether he is gay or not.
Respectfully, this is hella corny, @cam, bringing on a Black woman to kill a Black man is never cool, (I) don’t care who’s right or wrong. All clickbait ain’t good clickbait. This ain’t love.
Smith wrote under Cam Newton’s Instagram post
On the controversial podcast episode, Newton questioned Reed about Howard’s history of sexual activities. Reed promptly responded by revealing that Howard engaged in having intercourse with a number of men during the 2020 lockdown period. This came after she accused her ex-partner of being mentally, emotionally and physically abusive to her.
On the other hand, however, Newton promptly responded to JR Smith’s comments, saying that he would not be willing to engage in a back-and-forth online. The former Sixth Man of the Year was standing up for his championship teammate — Smith and Dwight Howard were teammates on the 2020 championship Lakers squad.
Dwight Howard’s ‘gay’ allegations have a long history
While it may not have been the right place for Cam Newton to question Dwight Howard’s sexuality on his show, there have long been accusations of the former NBA star of engaging in questionable sexual activities.
In 2019, a person named Masin Elije accused Howard of sexually assaulting them during an encounter between them in 2018. While this lawsuit was dismissed in 2023, Howard would once again come under the scanner the same year when another lawsuit of assault was placed on him by a man named Stephen Harper.
Soon after, however, Harper dropped the lawsuit in August 2024, during which time Dwight Howard appeared in court to testify that he and Harper had engaged in ‘consensual sexual activity.’ Ever since, Howard’s sexuality has been a hot topic amongst fans and some former pundits, such as Cam Newton.
