The Pittsburgh Steelers have actively pushed for their 18th successive playoff campaign, starting 8-3 to the season. The Steelers, coming off a narrow escape to the playoffs last year, started without their starting quarterback Russell Wilson. Nevertheless, they managed a 4-2 record in the first six weeks before the former Super Bowl-winning champion joined in Week 7.
Russell Wilson took over the Pennsylvanian outfit with a resounding performance against the New York Jets in his first-ever outing. He wiped the slate clean in the two following wins. However, the Week 10 and Week 11 games unearthed an offensive flaw that could derail their season.
In the divisional victory against the Baltimore Ravens, it was Chris Boswell who carried the team. In last week’s TNF, Wilson, despite being able to put up a solid quarter, came short as the Cleveland Browns pummeled them down in a snowy affair.
Former professional Cam Newton critiqued the quarterback, on his podcast “4th & 1 with Cam Newton”. Newton expressed his concern, stating that the Steelers have carried the quarterback. He added that he doesn’t think Wilson is as impactful as the media makes him out to be.
Newton also pointed out the interception in the Ravens game in the red zone. Furthermore, he also highlighted the fact Chris Boswell scored all the points in the win.
Although they had a miserable game in Ohio on Thursday, Wilson’s last quarter antics could be a change for the better. In the fourth quarter, Wilson connected with Calvin Austin on a late TD pass. Furthermore, there’s been a visible hype in the Pittsburgh offense since the quarterback change. Over the last five games, Pittsburgh has averaged 25.6 points per game, compared to the 20.6 points per game they scored with Justin Fields.
Despite struggles, Pittsburgh Steelers to resign Russell Wilson in 2025
According to NFL insider Dianna Russini, the Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to re-sign quarterback Russell Wilson in 2025. Wilson is 4-1 with the Steelers. The management is reported to be content with Wilson’s performance so far.
The analyst wrote in the Athletic taking names of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold and Russell Wilson. Russini mentioned them as the biggest names in a paltry quarterback market.
Earlier, ESPN’s Draft analyst Matt Miller predicted the Steelers to bring in Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe with the 28th pick. Milroe is the starting quarterback of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Miller noted that there’s an uncertainty in the starting role once again in 2025 considering both Wilson and Justin Fields are free agents. He further added that Milroe is a good option for the Steelers, especially if he could develop as a starter under Russell Wilson, considering Wilson stays.

The Steelers still have AFC North matchups ahead, as they will face a potent Cincinnati Bengals team next week. Despite their losing record, the Bengals have shown they are a serious threat.
